Bridging Borders: How Mohamed Azarudeen is Redefining Indian Athletics Coaching Abroad
In a professional landscape where Indian athletics coaches rarely secure leadership roles beyond national borders, 32-year-old Mohamed Azarudeen has emerged as a trailblazer. Having recently taken the helm as the head coach for Malaysia’s middle- and long-distance running programs, the Ooty native is proving that Indian coaching expertise is ready for the global stage.
Seeking New Horizons
Azarudeen’s transition to Kuala Lumpur six months ago was driven by a desire for professional growth. Despite a decorated background—including mentoring Sreekiran Nandakumar, the first Indian 800m runner to qualify for the Youth Olympics—Azarudeen felt his trajectory in India’s national setup in Bengaluru had plateaued.
“I found myself in a position where the opportunities were very limited. Other coaches would be there, and we often didn’t have the chance to lead the national team,” Azarudeen explained. “I wanted to challenge myself, and I wanted to find new opportunities.”
Building a Legacy in Malaysia
While the Malaysian athletics landscape differs from India—specifically regarding the depth of talent—Azarudeen sees this as his greatest mission. With the nation’s sprinting programs already established, his focus is firmly on talent identification and the long-term development of middle- and long-distance runners.
Early results are promising. At a recent Continental Tour Silver meet in Bhubaneswar, his pupil Umar Osman delivered a standout performance in the men’s 400m, outperforming several seasoned Indian competitors.
Currently, Azarudeen is back on home soil, leading a high-intensity, month-long training camp for his Malaysian squad at the SAI centre in Thiruvananthapuram. The camp serves as a strategic preparation period ahead of the Asian Games, allowing his athletes to gain exposure to Indian training environments.
Elevating the Indian Coaching Brand
Azarudeen’s journey is rooted in a lifelong commitment to education. Holding World Athletics Level 1, 2, and 3 certifications, along with an NIS diploma, he views himself as a lifelong learner. He believes his move is a signal to the global community that Indian talent is not just limited to athletes, but extends to those who develop them.
“India has a lot of potential athletes, but we often hire foreign coaches, and the opportunities given to Indian coaches are very limited,” he noted. “We are often relegated to assistant roles. I hope to show that we have the expertise to lead.”
As he continues to push the boundaries of his profession, Azarudeen remains focused on his primary goal: modernizing training methods across Asia. By proving that an Indian athletics coach can successfully lead an international program, he is not just building a stronger team for Malaysia—he is paving the way for the next generation of Indian coaches to pursue their ambitions on the world stage.
