CD Projekt Red Targets 2028 for The Witcher 4; Details New Witcher 3 Expansion
CD Projekt Red has officially set the stage for the future of its flagship fantasy franchise. In a special video message addressing the community, Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed that the highly anticipated The Witcher 4 is currently targeting a 2028 release window.
While the developer is holding back on a specific calendar date, the announcement marks a significant milestone for the studio’s long-term roadmap. If CD Projekt Red successfully hits this 2028 target, it would align with the company’s broader, ambitious strategy to release the three planned games in the new Ciri-fronted trilogy within a six-year period. Following this timeline, fans could theoretically expect the fifth and sixth installments to arrive in 2031 and 2034, respectively.
“Our Biggest, Boldest, and Most Ambitious Game”
Nowakowski emphasized that the next major entry in the saga is being crafted by a team of over 500 developers. “The Witcher 4 features a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep, impactful story that we hope will stay with you for a long time,” he stated. “Simply put, this is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.”
Despite the excitement surrounding the project, CD Projekt Red confirmed that the game will not be making an appearance at Gamescom 2026. “I know it’s a bit of a wait and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait,” Nowakowski added.
Returning to The Witcher 3: “Songs of the Past”
While the future of the series is clearly defined, CD Projekt Red is not finished with Geralt of Rivia’s iconic story just yet. The studio is preparing to launch a brand-new, standalone expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past.
Co-developed with Fool’s Theory—a studio composed of industry veterans who contributed to the original game—Songs of the Past is slated for a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
According to studio executives, the expansion serves as a bridge between The Witcher 3 and the upcoming saga. While it is not a direct, literal prologue to The Witcher 4, it is designed to keep the community engaged with the Witcher 3 setting and thematic elements while setting the stage for the franchise’s future.
What to Expect from the Expansion
Details surrounding the plot remain largely under wraps, though developers have teased the importance of a mysterious new sword wielded by Geralt, which features an ornate, curved crossguard. Senior community manager Laura Beitzel noted that the expansion’s scope will be comparable to the acclaimed Blood and Wine add-on.
In addition to new narrative content, Songs of the Past is confirmed to include additional Gwent cards. The studio is also continuing its work on long-requested cross-platform mod support for The Witcher 3, which is expected to arrive at a later date.
As The Witcher 3 continues to boast massive success—having recently reached a staggering 65 million units sold—CD Projekt Red remains committed to delivering high-quality experiences for its fanbase. With the expansion arriving in 2027 and the next major chapter in 2028, the world of the Continent appears to have a very busy few years ahead.
