CD Projekt Red Targets 2028 Release for The Witcher 4, Announces New Witcher 3 Content

After years of speculation and anticipation, CD Projekt Red has finally provided a clearer roadmap for the future of its flagship fantasy franchise. In a recent update, Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that the studio is aiming to launch the highly anticipated The Witcher 4 in 2028.

While the studio has been working on the next mainline installment of the saga for several years—transitioning to Unreal Engine 5—the announcement marks the first time leadership has publicly committed to a specific release window. The project, which has already been teased through technical demos and cinematic previews, represents a massive leap for the studio as it moves beyond the technology that powered The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Bridging the Gap: Songs of the Past

Fans of the series will not have to wait until 2028 for new content, however. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it is keeping the world of The Witcher 3 alive with a new expansion titled Songs of the Past.

The expansion is scheduled for a 2027 release and is set to be a major highlight at this week’s Gamescom. The project will take the spotlight during Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live event, which is scheduled for Tuesday at 2PM ET. This expansion aims to provide fans with a fresh experience in the beloved world while they wait for the next generation of Witcher gameplay.

Expanding the Universe and Internal Challenges

Beyond the mainline single-player entries, CD Projekt Red continues to diversify its portfolio within the Witcher universe. The company is currently developing a multiplayer spinoff, codenamed “Project Siris,” intended to explore new gameplay mechanics within the franchise’s dark fantasy setting.

However, the expansion of the studio’s output has not been without difficulty. In a sobering update earlier this month, CD Projekt Red confirmed it had implemented layoffs impacting staff specifically assigned to the Project Siris multiplayer title. These staffing changes highlight the operational hurdles the studio is navigating as it balances multiple high-profile projects simultaneously.
