NEW DELHI – Starting September 1, the international departure experience at airports across India is set to become significantly more efficient. In a move designed to modernize travel procedures, the Bureau of Immigration has announced that travelers will no longer be mandated to carry or have their physical boarding passes stamped by immigration officials.
The landmark policy shift, reported by the Hindustan Times, applies to every international airport in the country. By moving away from the cumbersome requirement of paper documentation, the government aims to reduce passenger congestion and streamline the flow through security and immigration checkpoints.
A Seamless Digital Transition
Under the new directive, international travelers will be able to clear immigration by simply presenting an electronic boarding pass on their smartphones or other digital devices. This change is expected to be a major win for the increasing number of passengers who utilize mobile check-in apps and online portals, effectively removing a redundant step in their journey.
While the move signals a major push toward paperless travel, officials have clarified that paper boarding passes will remain a valid option. However, even for those who prefer the traditional method, the mandatory “immigration stamp” will be officially retired.
