Gurgaon Paralyzed by Heavy Rainfall: Schools Shift Online, Offices Advise Work-From-Home

GURUGRAM: Following a relentless spell of heavy rainfall that left the city struggling with severe waterlogging and gridlocked traffic, the Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued an emergency advisory for Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Authorities have mandated that all educational institutions transition to online learning and have urged corporate offices to implement “work from home” (WFH) protocols to mitigate the ongoing chaos.

A City Under Water

The crisis was triggered by a massive downpour on Monday, with the city recording approximately 75 mm of rainfall by the afternoon. The deluge overwhelmed existing drainage systems, leading to extensive flooding across key arterial roads and residential sectors.

The situation reached a breaking point as school buses became stranded in deep water, particularly near Subhash Chowk, forcing children to remain inside their vehicles for hours. To prevent further safety risks and to allow civic agencies to clear waterlogged stretches, the DDMA stepped in with strict directives.

“The decision is intended to significantly reduce traffic congestion and provide a clear window for our teams to undertake urgent road and drain maintenance,” a spokesperson for the local administration stated.

Impacted Areas and Traffic Woes

Commuters faced a nightmare scenario on Monday and Tuesday morning as major junctions turned into bottlenecks. Reports of severe waterlogging emerged from:

• Key Intersections: Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, and Narsinghpur.
• Major Arteries: Sohna Road, Mehrauli Road, Old Delhi Road, and the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
• Residential and Commercial Hubs: Golf Course Road, Sector 5, Sector 45, and Sector 52.

The Naharpur underpass was also severely affected, further complicating transit for emergency vehicles, including ambulances, which were spotted struggling through the water-filled streets. Traffic police have been deployed in full force at high-congestion zones, such as the Sirhaul border and Rajiv Chowk, to manage the stranded flow of vehicles.

IMD Warning and Ongoing Response

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the National Capital Region (NCR), warning that the cycle of heavy rainfall is likely to continue. In response, civic authorities have ramped up pumping operations, mobilizing teams across the city to clear accumulated water and address blocked drainage lines.

As the city braces for further precipitation, the administration has urged residents to limit non-essential travel. The shift to online classes remains the priority for all government and private educational institutions to ensure the safety of students until the weather conditions stabilize.
