Pakistan Army Chief Visits Tehran Amid Heightened Tensions and US-Iran Friction

TEHRAN — Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Monday for high-level diplomatic discussions, a visit that has gained significant attention following reports that he held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump just days prior.

According to a report from CNN, the conversation between the two leaders took place last week, with the agenda focused heavily on the volatile security situation involving Iran. While details of the call remain guarded, the timing of the engagement underscores the complex geopolitical balancing act being performed by Islamabad as regional tensions escalate.

Accusations of US Breach of Agreement

The backdrop of General Munir’s visit is dominated by a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June, which was intended to de-escalate hostilities in West Asia. The agreement sought to establish channels for technical cooperation, specifically regarding the security of the Strait of Hormuz and the management of Iran’s nuclear program.

During his meetings in Tehran, General Munir was met with strong criticism from Iranian officials regarding the United States’ adherence to this pact. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, reportedly reviewed “numerous instances” of alleged US non-compliance with the memorandum.

“The commitments of the parties in the Memorandum of Understanding are clear, and it was America that, by breaching its commitments, prevented the establishment of stability in the region,” Ghalibaf stated via his Telegram channel.

Security Concerns and Diplomatic Pressure

In a separate meeting, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, underscored Iran’s position that the United States must alter its current trajectory. Rezaei emphasized that Iran remains committed to the spirit of the MoU and the management of regional maritime security, urging that Washington take “practical steps” to honor the terms of the agreement.

The Iranian leadership has signaled that, despite external pressures and international sanctions, Tehran intends to continue its efforts to implement the terms of the June agreement.
