Global Cricket Icons Rally for Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Amid Health Concerns
In an extraordinary show of international solidarity, a group of 21 legendary cricketers—including some of the sport’s most iconic figures—have issued a renewed appeal to Pakistani authorities, calling for urgent and adequate medical care for the country’s imprisoned former Prime Minister and captain, Imran Khan.
A Humanitarian Call
The former Pakistan leader has been incarcerated since 2023 following convictions in various corruption-related cases—charges he continues to vehemently deny. Recent months have seen mounting alarm over his physical well-being, with reports circulating that the 1992 World Cup-winning captain has suffered a significant loss of vision in one eye.
The situation reached a flashpoint last week when, despite a directive from Pakistan’s top court for a medical evaluation, reports suggested Khan did not receive a thorough or appropriate examination. In response, a coalition of 21 former international captains and players signed a second letter demanding that the state fulfill its humanitarian obligations.
Beyond Politics: The “Airbrushing” Concern
Former England captain Michael Atherton, a prominent signatory of the appeal, recently shed light on the deeper motivations behind the collective move. Speaking on a Sky Sports cricket podcast alongside colleague Nasser Hussain, Atherton suggested that the issue transcends simple medical advocacy.
“The basic theme was the way the state has tried to airbrush Imran almost out of existence, which is increasingly difficult to do in a social media age,” Atherton remarked. He argued that the authorities are attempting to systematically scrub the former leader’s legacy from the public consciousness, a maneuver that the cricketing fraternity is keen to resist.
A Rare Cross-Border Alliance
The appeal has transcended the fierce political tensions that often define India-Pakistan relations. Notably, former Indian captains Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, and Dilip Vengsarkar are among the signatories.
Kapil Dev, in particular, emphasized that his involvement was driven by personal regard and humanitarian ethics rather than political interference. Acknowledging that Pakistani cricketers might find it hazardous to speak out due to the volatile local climate, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain noted:
“I don’t blame Pakistani cricketers for not speaking up. They have to live there. But I would like to support my friend, whom we admired and played with.”
Kapil stressed that the group is not challenging the Pakistani judiciary or legal process. Instead, they are advocating for the basic rights and dignity owed to any prisoner—especially one who once led the nation. “We don’t know the law of the country, that’s fine. But humility and simple facilities should be given to a prisoner, whoever he may be,” he added.
