Mumbai Emerges as a Global Hub for Remote Work, Outranking London and Miami
Mumbai, India’s financial powerhouse, is shedding its image as solely a center for commerce and cinema to embrace a new identity: a premier global destination for the “work from anywhere” (WFA) professional. In the latest edition of the annual IWG Work From Anywhere Index, Mumbai has made a landmark debut, becoming the only Indian city to secure a spot on the prestigious list.
With a score of 77, Mumbai has outperformed major international hubs, including London and Miami, marking a significant milestone for India’s urban landscape.
A New Standard for Urban Workspaces
The IWG index evaluates cities based on a comprehensive set of criteria essential for modern remote professionals. Rather than focusing solely on tourism appeal, the index analyzes the infrastructure necessary to function as a temporary office. Key metrics include climate, broadband connectivity, the availability of high-quality flexible workspaces, local transport costs, accommodation, cultural vibrancy, and food availability.
Mumbai earned high marks for its competitive transport costs, widespread availability of co-working spaces, favorable climate, and diverse accommodation options. While the city excelled in these logistical areas, the report noted room for improvement in areas such as broadband speed and quality, the density of local events, and the overall happiness index.
India’s Dominance in Flexible Office Space
Mumbai’s recognition on the global stage coincides with a broader shift in the Indian commercial real estate sector. According to data from Cushman & Wakefield’s Global Trends in Flexible Office 2025 report, India has firmly established itself as a leader in the flexible office space market, scoring a perfect 100 on the maturity index. This places India ahead of established economies like the UK (98), France (97), and the US (81).
As of the second quarter of 2025, India boasted a staggering 79.7 million square feet of flexible office stock across its top eight cities, a figure that is projected to surpass 100 million square feet by 2026. This data underscores India’s pivotal role in the global evolution of the workplace.
The Future of the “Work-Life” Blend
The global rise of WFA policies is fundamentally altering how professionals approach travel and leisure. Research commissioned by IWG highlights that 51% of workers now have access to WFA policies from their employers. The benefits are being felt across the board: 90% of workers report an improved work-life balance, and 80% claim a boost in overall productivity. Perhaps most tellingly, 62% of employees indicated they would be willing to change jobs to secure a better flexible work policy.
This shift has also ushered in the era of “workations.” Nearly half (48%) of surveyed professionals plan to extend their holidays or weekend getaways by working remotely in 2026. Furthermore, 43% of respondents have already integrated remote work into their holiday plans, allowing them to travel without dipping into their annual leave.
Global Rankings
While Mumbai’s inclusion marks a major win for India, the index continues to be led by cities that offer a perfect harmony of lifestyle and infrastructure. Bangkok claimed the top spot with a score of 106.5, followed by Tokyo (96.5) and Barcelona (95.5). Porto and Vancouver rounded out the top five, while Budapest, Naples, Medellin, Lisbon, and Seoul completed the top ten list of the world’s most desirable locations for remote work.
As global mobility continues to evolve, Mumbai’s position in the Work From Anywhere Index serves as a testament to the city’s growing appeal to the modern, tech-enabled workforce.
