Bedford Borough Council Cracks Down on Environmental Crime with Over £6,500 in Penalties
Bedford Borough Council has sent a clear message to those who disregard local waste regulations, securing a series of successful prosecutions against businesses and individuals for environmental offenses. Following a string of hearings at Luton Magistrates’ Court in July 2026, the council’s dedicated Enviro Crime team successfully held offenders accountable, resulting in a combined total of more than £6,500 in fines, legal costs, and victim surcharges.
The council’s latest enforcement action highlights a firm commitment to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the borough’s streets.
Recent Convictions
The court cases centered on a failure to adhere to commercial waste disposal protocols and instances of fly-tipping:
- Bedford Fruit & Veg Limited: The High Street business was ordered to pay a total of £1,327 in fines, costs, and surcharges. Despite being instructed to secure a commercial waste bin and remove it from the public footpath, the business failed to comply over several months.
- La Pinata Ltd and Dilzar Miah: Following reports of fly-tipping and the misuse of residential bins in Rush Court, the business failed to produce mandatory waste disposal documentation. The company was ordered to pay £2,226. Additionally, company director Dilzar Miah was fined £560 for failing to appear in court.
- Sandy Miranda: The owner of Suadade café on Harpur Street was hit with a bill of £2,411 after a van-sized fly-tip was traced back to the business. Miranda failed to assist the council’s subsequent investigation into the illegal dumping on Dane Street.
A Zero-Tolerance Approach
Councillor Andrea Spice, Portfolio Holder for Economic Prosperity, Planning, Housing, and Regulatory Services, emphasized that the council remains steadfast in its efforts to preserve the local environment.
“These prosecutions show that Bedford Borough Council will not tolerate environmental crime,” said Councillor Spice. “Fly-tipping and waste offences blight our communities, damage local pride, and cost taxpayers money to clear up. We will continue to take robust action against offenders, while making it as easy as possible for residents and businesses to dispose of waste responsibly.”
The council clarified that while awarded costs go toward covering the expense of investigations and court proceedings, the fines themselves are directed to the central government, and victim surcharges are used to fund national support services.
