Nupur Sanon Defends Sister Kriti Sanon Amid Rakhi Ad Controversy and Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Creepy’ Remark

The recent Rakshabandhan jewellery campaign featuring Bollywood star Kriti Sanon has sparked a heated debate online, drawing sharp criticism from social media users and fellow actor Kangana Ranaut. As the controversy intensified, the actor’s sister, Nupur Sanon, stepped forward to defend her, silencing detractors with a pointed rebuttal.

The Source of the Backlash

The firestorm began when Kriti appeared in a promotional advertisement for a jewellery brand. In the campaign, she donned an ivory lehenga paired with a deep-neck blouse and a cape-style drape. While many praised the aesthetics of the ad, a vocal segment of the internet labeled the ensemble “inappropriate” for the festival of Rakshabandhan, arguing that the outfit lacked traditional modesty.

The criticism reached a fever pitch when actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut weighed in on her Instagram Stories. Ranaut criticized the styling choices, remarking, “From cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris… from all the options that are available to us today, why would you tie your brother a rakhi in your bikini/undergarments? The advert looks intentionally creepy!”

A Family Response: Nupur Sanon Hits Back

Nupur Sanon, who shares a close bond with her sister, did not hold back in her defense. Addressing the intrusive nature of the comments, she wrote on social media: “Imagine being this bothered by what another woman chooses to wear. Respectfully, evolve.”

She further countered the narrative by highlighting her own role in the real-life tradition they share. “PS: I’m the one she tied the rakhi to, and if I don’t have a problem with it, why do you?” she added, effectively dismissing the moral outrage directed at her sister’s sartorial choices.

Kriti Sanon Challenges the Narrative

Kriti Sanon herself took to Instagram to address the backlash, refusing to let critics dictate her cultural identity. She asserted that the essence of any festival lies in the emotions and bonds shared, not in the neckline of a garment.

“When will we stop telling women what to wear?” she wrote. “Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, but still, a woman’s respect for her culture is measured by just her clothes! Culture and traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline.”

She clarified that for her family, the tradition of Rakshabandhan is a sacred practice of mutual protection and love, which she extends even to her pets. Her response has since drawn significant support from fans who argue that fashion and tradition should not be mutually exclusive.

Looking Ahead

While the debate continues to rage in the digital sphere, Kriti Sanon remains focused on her professional commitments. The actor was recently seen in the project Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (often associated with recent streaming releases), further cementing her place in the industry despite the intermittent noise from social media critics.

As the conversation shifts, many are questioning the double standards often applied to female public figures when it comes to balancing modern fashion with traditional expectations.
