Former Australian Test batter Will Pucovski has initiated legal action against his former school, Brighton Grammar, alleging a failure in the institution’s duty of care following a pivotal head injury he sustained in 2014.
The lawsuit marks a significant development in the story of the once-prodigious talent, who was forced into early retirement from professional cricket in 2024 at just 27 years old. Pucovski’s legal team has filed a statement of claim asserting that the school mishandled the initial concussion, which occurred during an Australian rules football training session.
A Career Altered by Early Trauma
Pucovski’s professional journey was marred by a staggering 13 documented concussions. The legal case centers on the belief that his susceptibility to brain injuries began with the 2014 incident, which he previously described as a life-altering event.
According to accounts from the athlete, he was knocked unconscious during a training drill. Despite the severity of the impact, he was allegedly allowed to return to training just minutes later.
“I literally got walked to the sidelines and then my only memory was the coach coming up to me and being like, ‘Do you want to keep training?'” Pucovski recalled during an event for the Lord’s Taverners earlier this year. “I am like, ‘Yeah.’ So I just went and trained for the rest of the day. It is probably the biggest day of my life in a weird way, because I have never felt the same since that day.”
Pucovski reported that he began suffering from blurred vision the following day and was ultimately admitted to the hospital a week later. He spent a prolonged period incapacitated, unable to participate in daily life, an experience he noted as a stark departure from his former self.
A Brief but Brilliant Rise
Despite his injury history, Pucovski’s immense talent saw him reach the pinnacle of the sport. He earned his first and only Test cap for Australia in 2021 against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In an impressive display, the young opener scored 62 in the first innings against a world-class bowling attack, including Jasprit Bumrah. However, a shoulder injury during that match sidelined him for the remainder of the series, and he never regained the momentum required to cement a permanent spot in the national side.
His final match occurred in March 2024 while playing for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. After being struck on the helmet by a ball from bowler Riley Meredith, medical professionals advised that he step away from the sport permanently.

The International Concussion Society has frequently highlighted the dangers of mismanaged head injuries in developing athletes. Experts emphasize that adolescents, whose brains are not yet fully matured, are significantly more vulnerable to the long-term effects of cumulative head trauma.
