Qatar Islamic Insurance Group Secures License to Launch Operations in India’s GIFT City

GANDHINAGAR, India – The Qatar Islamic Insurance Group (QIIG) has reached a significant milestone in its international expansion strategy, officially securing a regulatory license to commence operations within India.

The approval, granted by the authorities at the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) located in GIFT City, Gujarat, marks a pivotal entry for the Doha-based insurer into the rapidly evolving Indian financial landscape. Under the terms of the authorization, the firm is set to establish a dedicated reinsurance branch, allowing it to provide specialized risk-coverage services from within the country’s premier global financial hub.

This move underscores the growing economic ties between Qatar and India and highlights the strategic importance of GIFT City as a gateway for international financial institutions looking to tap into India’s vast insurance and reinsurance sector.

By operating as a branch within the IFSC, the Qatar Islamic Insurance Group is positioning itself to leverage the unique regulatory framework provided by the centre, which is designed to attract global capital and provide a competitive environment for cross-border financial services.

Industry analysts suggest that the arrival of a major Sharia-compliant reinsurance player could diversify the risk-transfer landscape in India, offering new opportunities for Islamic finance models to integrate with the regional market.

The Qatari firm, which is listed on the Qatar Stock Exchange, has not yet announced a specific timeline for the commencement of its local underwriting activities, though the license marks the completion of the most critical regulatory hurdle for its India market entry.
