Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds: 157 Dead, Hundreds Missing After Devastating Flash Floods Near Nepal-Tibet Border

KATHMANDU – A catastrophic natural disaster has struck the Nepal-Tibet border region, leaving at least 157 people dead and hundreds more missing in a surge of flash floods that have decimated entire settlements.

The disaster unfolded at approximately 9:00 am local time, when massive torrents of water surged through the Bhote Koshi River after crossing from the Tibetan side. The deluge swept through several districts, with Rasuwa, Dhading, and Nuwakot reporting severe damage and destruction.

A Desperate Search for Survivors

Nepalese rescue teams are currently engaged in a high-stakes search-and-rescue operation, racing against time to locate survivors and recover victims buried beneath thick layers of slush and debris. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has pledged to deploy all government resources to aid in the recovery efforts.

“The pain and loss you have suffered is not small,” Prime Minister Shah said in a statement released on social media. “But I want to assure you that you are not alone in this difficult time—the state is with you with all its means and resources.”

The scale of the disaster is vast, with local authorities confirming that the flash floods have effectively wiped out entire villages, leaving many families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.

Foreign Nationals Among the Missing

According to the Ministry of Tourism, at least 403 tourists were accounted for as missing in the hours following the tragedy, 341 of whom are foreign nationals. Among those missing are at least 133 Indian pilgrims who were traveling toward the sacred Kailash Mansarovar.

The list of missing foreigners is international in scope, including citizens from Australia, Britain, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, and the United States.

International Support

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, neighboring India has moved quickly to provide aid. The Indian Air Force has deployed a transport aircraft carrying 10 tonnes of essential relief materials and medical supplies to assist those affected by the disaster.

Prime Minister Shah expressed his profound gratitude for the support, specifically thanking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “kind call and deep condolences.”

“We deeply appreciate your warm words of solidarity and your generous offer of assistance to Nepal during this difficult time,” Shah wrote in a social media post. “This gesture of solidarity is a reflection of the enduring bonds of friendship between our two countries, which we profoundly value.”

As rescue operations continue, government officials are focusing on evacuating residents from high-risk flood zones, fearing that further instability in the mountainous terrain could lead to additional landslides or secondary flooding events.
