COLOMBO – Sri Lanka’s emerging batting talents offered a glimpse of a brighter future on Wednesday, producing a spirited, high-intensity fightback on Day Four of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club. However, despite a display of grit, the hosts remain perilously close to a 0-2 series defeat as India edges toward a commanding victory.
With the hosts forced to follow on, Sri Lanka finished the rain-curtailed day at 229/6 in their second innings. Still trailing by 16 runs with only four wickets remaining, the match appears to be heading toward an inevitable conclusion on the final morning.
Sooriyabandara and Mendis Provide Hope
The highlight of the day was a masterful 115-run partnership between Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis. Sooriyabandara, appearing in just his second Test match, continued his breakthrough form with a classy 92 off 173 balls. His technical repertoire—featuring an array of sweeps and reverse-sweeps—effectively disrupted the rhythm of India’s left-arm spinner, Manav Suthar.
Mendis provided excellent support, contributing a combative 55 off 92 deliveries. The duo’s aggressive approach, which included dancing down the track to negate the spin, momentarily left the Indian bowlers searching for answers.
The breakthrough for the tourists came through a blend of tactical brilliance and athleticism. After Sooriyabandara was enticed down the pitch and beaten by a delivery that spun away, Rishabh Pant completed a sharp stumping. Shortly after, the momentum shifted decisively back to India when captain Shubman Gill pulled off a spectacular diving catch at square leg to dismiss Mendis off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna.
Dinusha Continues Remarkable Form
Earlier in the day, the spotlight was on Sonal Dinusha, who underlined his status as the series’ most dependable anchor for the hosts. Resuming at 265/8 in the first innings, Dinusha showcased tremendous composure to secure his second century of the series, scoring a defiant 103. His performance ensured the hosts crossed the follow-on threshold, though they were ultimately dismissed for 290, well short of India’s first-innings total of 503/9 declared.
India’s Controlled Dominance
Despite the resistance from the young Sri Lankan middle order, India’s collective class remained evident. Mohammed Siraj provided an early breakthrough in the second innings, exposing a recurring theme in the series: Sri Lanka’s fragile opening partnerships, which have yielded only 46 runs across eight innings.
Following the departure of the set batters, Suthar proved his worth by cleaning up the middle order, including the scalp of captain Dhananjaya de Silva.
As the rain descended on Colombo to truncate the day’s play, Sri Lanka found themselves left with a mountain to climb on the final morning.
