FromSoftware Rolls Out Massive Elden Ring Update 1.17 Ahead of Tarnished Edition Launch
FromSoftware has surprised the gaming community with a significant update for its award-winning action-RPG, Elden Ring. The latest patch, version 1.17, represents one of the most extensive sets of balance adjustments the game has received in years, arriving just as the developer gears up for the expansion of the franchise onto new hardware.
This major overhaul comes as FromSoftware prepares for the upcoming release of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2, which debuts tomorrow, August 28. The update acts as a prelude to the “Tarnished Pack” DLC—a content drop featuring new starting classes, gear, and cosmetic options for Torrent—that will be available across all platforms.
A Sweeping Meta Shift
The patch notes for version 1.17 reflect a deep dive into the game’s combat mechanics. Players across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox will find a laundry list of adjustments affecting both PvE and PvP playstyles.
In a move aimed at rewarding players who master precise timing, FromSoftware has introduced improved parry performance across the board. Additionally, the developer has reduced the recovery frames for various actions following a successful parry when using Daggers, Curved Swords, or Small Shields. For those who utilize the “Storm Wall” skill, the update removes its FP consumption entirely, making it a much more viable defensive option.
Offensive capabilities have also seen a widespread boost. Various Perfume Bottles—including Firespark, Lightning, and Chilling—have received increased attack power, while the Smithscript weapon class has been buffed with reduced stamina costs and higher damage for thrown attacks.
Targeted Nerfs and Bug Squashing
While the update is largely focused on buffs, a few high-performing tools have been reined in. The “Gravitational Missile” spell has been altered so that its projectiles no longer explode on impact with terrain. Meanwhile, the Rakshasa’s Great Katana has been hit with a competitive penalty: players wielding it will now take increased damage from others during their attack animations, effectively punishing reckless use in PvP.
The update also includes several quality-of-life fixes, such as resolving issues with mouse camera control on PC and correcting inconsistencies with Great Katana critical hit power.
Looking Toward the Future
With this major update, Elden Ring continues to maintain a vibrant, active community despite being over four years old. However, this may be one of the final major tuning passes for the title as FromSoftware shifts its focus toward upcoming projects, including the highly anticipated Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods.
As of today, all players are required to update their game to version 1.17 to continue participating in online play. Whether you are returning to the Lands Between to try out the new “Idus Knight” starting class or simply looking to refine your build with the latest combat tweaks, the changes are live now across all platforms.
