The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered Hits Nintendo Switch 2 with Enhanced Performance
CD Projekt Red provided a significant look at the future of handheld RPGs during its “REDstreams: On the Go!” presentation at gamescom 2026. The studio showcased the highly anticipated The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered running on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting a major technical leap over the console’s predecessor.
Technical Upgrades and Performance Targets
The presentation offered a deep dive into the technical specifications of the Remastered edition. While the original port for the first-generation Switch was widely praised for its feasibility, it struggled with dynamic resolutions that often dipped as low as 456p in busy urban areas like Novigrad.
The Switch 2 version, however, marks a clear evolution. CD Projekt Red confirmed the following performance targets:
- Handheld Mode: The game renders at 720p with a frame rate between 30 and 40fps, bolstered by Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support.
- Docked Mode: The target shifts to 1080p. The frame rate remains between 30 and 40fps, pushing toward a smoother 40fps when connected to a 120Hz-compatible display.
Beyond resolution, the stream showcased versatile control configurations, demonstrating that the title is fully optimized for various playstyles, including handheld, dual-grip, and mouse-and-keyboard setups.
A Meaningful Upgrade
For fans who spent hundreds of hours traversing the Continent on the original Switch, the difference is stark. The frame rates exhibited during the gamescom stream appear significantly more stable and fluid than the performance seen in the 2019 port. By leveraging the updated hardware of the Switch 2, CD Projekt Red is bringing a level of graphical fidelity and performance stability that was previously unachievable on Nintendo’s hybrid hardware.
Physical Release Still Under Wraps
As the stream concluded, viewers were eager for details regarding a physical launch for the console. When pressed on the matter, CD Projekt Red remained tight-lipped, offering a standard but promising response: “The news will come when the time is right.”
While the studio has not yet confirmed how this remastered version will compare to the performance on other high-end platforms, the footage suggests that the Switch 2 is well-positioned to become a premier destination for portable, AAA RPG experiences.
