GTA 6 Targeting 30fps on PS5; Rockstar Remains Undecided on Performance Mode

As anticipation for Rockstar Games’ blockbuster title continues to reach a fever pitch, fresh insights have emerged regarding the game’s technical performance on current-generation hardware. According to recent reports, GTA 6 is currently targeting a 30fps frame rate on PlayStation 5, with developers remaining non-committal regarding the inclusion of a dedicated “Performance Mode.”

Insights from the Developer’s Office

The confirmation comes via YouTuber Davy Jones, who recently visited Rockstar’s Edinburgh studio alongside a group of industry influencers. During the visit, the group spoke with lead developer and co-director Rob Nelson, who confirmed that the current development target for the game across all consoles is 30fps.

While this may come as disappointing news to players who prioritize high frame rates, Nelson did not entirely rule out the possibility of a smoother experience. He reportedly left the door open for future optimizations, noting that he would need to consult with the studio’s technical team to determine if a 60fps option could be implemented—either at launch or through a post-release update.

The Hardware Bottleneck

Industry analysts suggest that the density and complexity of Grand Theft Auto VI’s open world make a 60fps target on base PS5 hardware a significant technical hurdle. Even with the introduction of the PlayStation 5 Pro, which features a more powerful GPU, the console’s CPU may lack the overhead required to double the frame rate for such a demanding simulation.

Many observers note that Rockstar’s titles typically push the limits of whatever hardware they are released on, prioritizing visual fidelity, AI density, and environmental complexity over raw frame rate.

How Do Players Feel?

The news has ignited a debate within the gaming community regarding the necessity of 60fps for a premium open-world experience. Recent polling data highlights the divide among fans:

  • 25% of players state that 30fps is a deal-breaker, insisting on 60fps for their gameplay experience.
  • 27% express a desire for at least a 40fps intermediate option.
  • 31% remain willing to adapt to 30fps if necessary.
  • The remainder of the community either expressed indifference toward frame rates or had little interest in the title initially.

As Rockstar continues to refine the title, fans will be looking for any further technical updates from the developer. Whether the game pushes the boundaries of current consoles or leaves players waiting for a potential future hardware iteration, the sheer scale of the return to Vice City remains the most anticipated event in gaming history.
