Rockstar Games Reveals Massive Scale of GTA 6 Map: Three Times Larger Than Red Dead Redemption 2

The anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 has reached a fever pitch, and Rockstar Games is finally pulling back the curtain on the sheer scale of its upcoming open-world epic. In a series of recent confirmations provided to The New York Times and prominent gaming creator TGG, the developer has detailed exactly how the sprawling state of Leonida dwarfs the studio’s previous masterworks.

A New Standard for Open-World Scope

According to Rockstar, the map for GTA 6 is nothing short of revolutionary in size. The playable area will be three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2 and double the size of the iconic Grand Theft Auto 5 map. Perhaps most impressive is the expansion of the game’s core urban center: the new iteration of Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos, and when factoring in the surrounding suburbs, the total metropolitan area is a staggering 11 times larger than the environment players explored in GTA 5.

For those curious about how these metrics compare to past titles, you can read more about how the GTA 6 map size stacks up against Rockstar’s legendary history of open-world design.

Beyond the Horizon: Interior Depth

Size, however, is only half the story. Rockstar has confirmed that the game will feature “hundreds” of accessible interiors. While GTA 5 and GTA Online offered limited entry points—often gated by loading screens or highly restrictive boundaries—GTA 6 aims to create a more seamless and layered experience. The extended look at the game suggests that these interiors will play a critical role in both narrative missions and open-world exploration, further grounding the player in the vibrant, lived-in world of Leonida.

The Evolution of the Rockstar World

Speaking with IGN, Rockstar Games’ Rob Nelson noted that the team is applying lessons learned from the meticulous development of Red Dead Redemption 2.

“With Red Dead Redemption 2, we finally had the team and the tech to push the idea of making a fully realized, consistent-feeling world further than we ever had,” Nelson explained. He emphasized that the goal is to create an environment where players are constantly pulled in different directions by the world’s natural design, encouraging the “magical” sense of discovery that has become a hallmark of the studio’s prestige titles.

Nelson described GTA 6 as a direct evolution of this philosophy: “Doing everything we possibly can to create the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in.”

As Rockstar Games continues to peel back the layers of its most ambitious project to date, it is clear that Grand Theft Auto 6 is not just aiming to be the next big entry in a storied franchise, but a new benchmark for the entire industry.
