Accused in Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Incident Seeks to Plead Guilty; Court Hearing Adjourned

In a significant development regarding the January 2025 attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, the primary accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam, has formally approached the court expressing his intention to plead guilty. The incident, which left the veteran actor hospitalized with multiple stab wounds, sent shockwaves through the film industry and raised concerns about security in upscale residential areas of Mumbai.

Legal Proceedings and Plea

Mohammad Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi national who has been held in judicial custody since his arrest two days after the attack, filed an application on Friday indicating his willingness to admit to the charges. His defense attorney, Vipul Dushing, confirmed that the application also includes a plea for leniency.

In response, the court has directed the prosecution to file an official reply to the request. The matter has been adjourned until September 11, at which point the court will determine the next steps in the legal process.

Earlier this month, Additional Sessions Judge G.P. Deshmukh officially framed charges against Islam, setting the stage for trial. The accused faces severe charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including robbery involving a deadly weapon, causing grievous hurt, and criminal house trespass. Furthermore, he is being prosecuted under the Foreigners Act and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules for illegal entry into the country.

A Terrifying Ordeal

The incident occurred on January 16, 2025, when an intruder gained access to the actor’s 12th-floor apartment in Bandra. Saif Ali Khan, 54, sustained repeated knife wounds during the struggle. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital for emergency surgery and remained under medical supervision for five days before being discharged.

In a recent interview with Mojo Story, the actor provided a harrowing account of the event, admitting that he feared for his life as he lay on the floor of his home. He recounted a poignant moment with his son, Taimur, during the ordeal, noting that he had to reassure the child that he was not dying while they headed to the hospital.

Reflecting on the attacker, Khan expressed a complex emotional response. “I even wanted to forgive this guy because I think he made a huge mistake… I would be happy to forgive him, but that part where he tried to kill me is something that I am finding hard to let go,” he stated. The actor further reflected on the broader societal implications of the attack, describing it as a manifestation of the extreme inequality between the “haves and have-nots.”

Professional Outlook

Despite the trauma of the stabbing incident, Saif Ali Khan continues to move forward with his professional commitments. He is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan and co-starring Akshay Kumar. The highly anticipated project is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
