Modders Uncover Unofficial “DLSS 5” AI Tech, Triggering Visual Overhauls Across Popular Titles

A group of enterprising modders has managed to extract and implement an experimental version of Nvidia’s upcoming DLSS 5 technology, triggering a wave of unintended visual transformations in fan-favorite games. The files, which were discovered within an early-access build of NBA 2K27, have been successfully ported to titles including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, Control, and Palworld.

The breakthrough, led by members of the RenoDX modding community, centers on a “Neural Rendering” file found within the leaked build. Since its discovery, social media platforms and forums have been flooded with footage demonstrating the radical, often polarizing, changes the tech forces upon existing game assets.

“Yassified” Graphics and Real-Time Rendering

Early experiments reveal that the mod significantly alters the artistic intent of the games it touches. In one demonstration using Control, the protagonist Jesse Faden’s facial features undergo a dramatic shift when the “Neural Uplift” setting is toggled. Without the mod, her face retains its original, uniform design; with it enabled, her complexion becomes paler and her features appear heavily contoured, with intensified laugh lines and smudged, makeup-like textures around the eyes.

Similar effects have been observed in other titles. In GTA: San Andreas, the mod applies a distinct filter that enhances textures while simultaneously shifting the color palette from warm to cool tones. In Palworld, the technology adds a layer of depth and shadow to the game’s typically flat, vibrant aesthetic.

These visual shifts appear to be a hallmark of the controversial DLSS 5 technology, which Nvidia originally unveiled in March. The tech claims to use AI to generate “photoreal lighting and materials” in real-time, but it has faced significant backlash for potentially homogenizing character designs—a phenomenon some critics have dubbed “yassification.”

Performance Costs and Hardware Requirements

While the visual changes are profound, the cost to performance is equally significant. Modders report that the unofficial implementation is highly resource-intensive, with some users noting a massive drop in frame rates. One user testing the mod in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth claimed it “halved” their FPS, while others documented a collapse from 90 FPS to 29 FPS in GTA V after adjusting the technology’s intensity sliders. Furthermore, users have noted that switching between DLSS 5 presets places extreme demand on VRAM.

Initially, these files were only being tested on Nvidia’s cutting-edge RTX 50-series chips. However, thanks to the ingenuity of the modding community, reports indicate the technology has now been successfully coerced into running on high-end RTX 4090 and 4080 hardware.

Nvidia’s Stance

The discovery comes at a sensitive time for Nvidia. Following the initial unveiling of DLSS 5, many players voiced concerns that the AI-driven graphics overhaul could compromise the artistic vision of developers. Addressing the backlash, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang insisted that the tool “doesn’t change the artistic control” of the games it renders.

Despite the skepticism surrounding the technology’s tendency to make characters look “generic” or overly filtered, it remains one of the most anticipated updates in the hardware space. With DLSS 5 officially scheduled for release this fall, the current leaks offer a glimpse into a future where AI-driven “neural rendering” may become a standard—albeit controversial—part of the PC gaming experience.
