During this year’s Gamescom 2026, CD Projekt Red officially unveiled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, a comprehensive visual and gameplay overhaul of the iconic RPG. While the developer has confirmed that existing owners of the Complete Edition will receive the update free of charge on September 29, the transition to the remastered version comes with a significant catch: a substantial spike in hardware demands.
A New Standard for Performance
The remastered edition aims to modernize the decade-old title with improved graphical fidelity, performance optimizations, and refined gameplay mechanics. However, these technical leaps have rendered the original system requirements obsolete. According to the title’s newly updated Battle.Net store page, the entry barrier for PC players has been raised considerably.
The minimum hardware requirements for the remastered version now demand an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, paired with 12 GB of RAM and 70 GB of SSD space. For comparison, the original 2015 release was playable on hardware as modest as an Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD A10-5800K.
The GPU requirements have seen a similar trajectory. Players will now need at least an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 (6 GB), AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT, or Intel Arc A580 to run the game, a stark jump from the original’s requirement of an NVIDIA GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7870.
Recommended Specs and Future-Proofing
For those looking to experience the game at recommended settings, the bar has been pushed even higher. CD Projekt Red now suggests an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, supported by 16 GB of RAM. Graphical performance at this tier now targets cards like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super, AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, or the Intel Arc B580.
These shifts highlight just how much the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered has evolved under the hood. While these components remain relatively accessible for modern builds, players on legacy systems may find themselves unable to launch the updated game once the patch rolls out.
Handheld Compatibility and The Road Ahead
Beyond the PC platform, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the remastered edition will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2. This suggests that the game is being optimized for mobile architectures, raising hopes that it will be fully compatible with the Valve Steam Deck and other handheld gaming PCs.
