Nayanthara and Kavin’s ‘Hi’ Makes a Steady Start at the Box Office

The much-anticipated pairing of Lady Superstar Nayanthara and rising star Kavin has officially arrived on the big screen. The film, titled Hi, hit theaters this Friday, marking the beginning of its theatrical journey with a respectable opening-day performance across India.

Opening Day Box Office Breakdown

According to data from Sacnilk, Hi secured an India net collection of Rs 1.23 crore on its opening day. The film, which was screened across 786 shows, maintained a steady 33% overall occupancy rate throughout the day.

The film’s performance was bolstered primarily by its Tamil release, which accounted for Rs 1.14 crore of the total net earnings. The Telugu version contributed an additional Rs 9 lakhs to the domestic tally. At present, the movie’s worldwide gross stands at Rs 1.38 crore, as international market reports are still being consolidated.

A Romantic Comedy of Errors

The film centers on Mayilsamy (played by Kavin), a young man weary of constant romantic rejection. His life takes a chaotic yet comedic turn when he crosses paths with Devayani (played by Nayanthara), who is desperate to escape an impending arranged marriage set up by her father, Indhiran (Prabhu).

To thwart the wedding, Mayilsamy concocts a desperate scheme: claiming that Devayani is pregnant with his child and inventing a fictional lover named “Shakira” to add weight to his lie. The plan gains unexpected momentum when Mayilsamy’s mother, Parimala (Radhika Sarathkumar), becomes thrilled at the prospect of becoming a grandmother, leading her to postpone the wedding for three months—giving the protagonists a narrow window to execute their plan.

Critical Reception

Featuring a seasoned supporting cast, including the late K. Bhagyaraj, Hi has received positive feedback for its performances. In its ETimes review, the film was lauded for Kavin’s sharp comedic timing and expressive range.

The review noted that while Nayanthara brings her signature star power to the role, the supporting cast—particularly Radhika Sarathkumar and the late K. Bhagyaraj—elevates the material significantly. With music composed by Jen Martin, the film is being viewed as a lighthearted entertainer that relies on strong chemistry and a rapid-fire script.

As the weekend progresses, industry experts will be watching closely to see if the positive word-of-mouth can help Hi sustain its momentum at the box office.
