Sir James Cleverly Resigns from Shadow Cabinet to Launch London Mayoral Bid
In a surprise political maneuver, senior Conservative MP Sir James Cleverly has stepped down from his role as shadow housing secretary to formally announce his candidacy for Mayor of London.
The former Foreign Secretary, who served under Rishi Sunak, made the announcement in an op-ed for The Times, signaling his intention to challenge the current Labour administration for the capital’s top office. His departure from the shadow cabinet, led by party leader Kemi Badenoch, marks a significant shift in the Conservative party’s internal dynamics as they look toward the next electoral cycle.
A Pivot to the Capital
Explaining his decision to relinquish his frontbench position, Sir James stated, “I must be free to speak about every aspect of London’s future and concentrate fully on winning this race.” He emphasized that his campaign would focus on restoring London’s global standing, promising to “rebuild its reputation and make it, once again, the best place in the world to live, work, invest and build a business.”
He framed his platform as a rejection of the current municipal status quo, arguing that “our capital needs more than an administrator.”
The road to the next mayoral election is long, with the capital not scheduled to head to the polls until 2028. The incumbent, Sir Sadiq Khan, has yet to clarify his intentions regarding an unprecedented fourth term in office.
A Seasoned Political Operator
Sir James, an army reservist, brings a wealth of ministerial experience to the race. Throughout his tenure under three different Prime Ministers, he has held some of the most sensitive posts in government, including Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary, and Education Secretary.
His history with London politics is long-standing; before his election as the MP for Braintree in 2015, he represented the Conservative Party on the London Assembly, providing him with a foundational understanding of the capital’s governance.
Despite his extensive experience, the move comes after a challenging year for the politician. Following the Conservative Party’s electoral defeat, he made a bid for the leadership of the party in 2024, but ultimately lost the contest to Kemi Badenoch.

Analysts suggest that Sir James’s early entry into the race serves a dual purpose: it allows him to begin building a campaign infrastructure well in advance of the 2028 vote and positions him as a central figure in the Conservative Party’s post-election resurgence.
