Cleveland Police Launch Investigation After Violent Protests Erupt in Hartlepool

HARTLEPOOL, UK — A series of disturbing incidents in Hartlepool has prompted a firm response from Cleveland Police, as authorities condemn acts of violence and intimidation following two separate gatherings in the town.

In a span of less than 48 hours, police were called to respond to escalating tensions at residential addresses. In one particularly distressing incident on Thursday, August 29, a property occupied by children was pelted with rocks and bricks after a group of individuals assembled outside.

The wave of unrest began the previous day, when officers were dispatched to another address where a group claiming to be engaged in a [peaceful protest] turned to criminality. During this incident, a 29-year-old man was subjected to a targeted assault, which included racial abuse and the theft of his personal belongings. The victim was subsequently transported to the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton, where he remained overnight for medical treatment.

Cleveland Police confirmed that a 54-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with the first assault and remains in police custody.

Following the second incident on Thursday, where windows were shattered by projectiles at a family home, a 46-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of obstructing or resisting a constable in the execution of their duty.

Superintendent Paul Richardson of Cleveland Police issued a stark warning to those involved, emphasizing that while the force supports the right to lawful protest, they will not tolerate violence.

“Whilst police will facilitate a peaceful and lawful protest, any escalation of violence or criminality will be dealt with appropriately and robustly,” Superintendent Richardson stated. “We will not tolerate incidents such as these, where groups of people target individuals and cause people harm or destroy property. Anyone who carries out this type of mindless behaviour can expect to be arrested and put before the courts.”

Authorities have confirmed that these incidents are not linked to organized crime. To reassure the local community, Cleveland Police have pledged to maintain a highly visible presence in the affected areas throughout the coming days.
