Rescue Efforts Underway as Flash Flooding Devastates Grand Canyon Infrastructure

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK — A massive rescue and recovery operation is underway at the Grand Canyon following a catastrophic flash flood that decimated trails and infrastructure, leaving at least one person dead and authorities scrambling to account for hikers missing in the rugged terrain.

The National Park Service (NPS) confirmed that the body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River late Saturday. As of Sunday evening, officials were working to locate approximately 15 individuals who remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of the disaster.

The flooding, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, caused “significant impacts” to the Bright Angel Creek corridor. The deluge unleashed a torrent of water, mud, and debris—including massive boulders and sections of metal structures—that tore through the canyon, widening the creek bed and physically reshaping the landscape.

“We saw the creek flood, waterfalls coming up out of nowhere, boulders, mud, landslides happening everywhere,” said Parth Desai, a physician who was hiking the canyon with a group when the storm hit. Desai and his companions were eventually rescued via helicopter.

Infrastructure in Ruins

The damage to the park’s infrastructure is extensive. Officials reported that nearly all footbridges in the affected area were destroyed, effectively severing hiker access across the creek. Furthermore, the flood compromised the park’s primary water pipeline, which serves as the sole water source for both residents and visitors on the South Rim.

The NPS has announced the closure of the North Kaibab Trail, Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, and the Black and Silver bridges until further notice. No timeline for reopening has been established as assessment teams navigate the hazardous conditions.

Urgent Appeal for Information

Authorities are urgently requesting the public’s assistance in accounting for hikers who were in the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29. The NPS is specifically seeking information regarding anyone who had campground reservations in the area or was traveling between the North Kaibab Trailhead and Phantom Ranch.

A Dangerous Environment

This week’s tragedy highlights the extreme volatility of the desert landscape during monsoon season. The region is currently under a flash flood watch that is expected to remain in effect through Monday evening. The National Weather Service has warned that incoming showers and thunderstorms could trigger further dangerous surges in narrow slot canyons and dry washes.

For the 62 people evacuated Sunday, the ordeal ended at the Maswik Lodge on the South Rim, where the American Red Cross is providing aid. However, for rescue teams, the work is far from over. With the Coconino County medical examiner on-site and search crews deployed, the focus remains on locating those still missing in the wake of the deluge.
