From Missed Opportunities to Cinematic Reunion: Priyadarshan Reflects on His Long History with Saif Ali Khan

Acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan has opened up about his enduring connection with Saif Ali Khan, shedding light on a “what-could-have-been” moment from the past and a shared bond that spans generations. In a recent interview, the director revealed that the Bollywood star was nearly cast in his 2005 cult comedy Garam Masala, a project that ultimately became a cornerstone of Akshay Kumar’s career.

The Missed Casting of ‘Garam Masala’

Priyadarshan shared that he had initially approached Saif Ali Khan to star in Garam Masala, intending to narrate the script to him. However, the production faced a hurdle that would change the film’s trajectory.

“I had gone to meet Saif to narrate the story,” the director explained to News 18. “Writer Neeraj Vora was still working on the complete script at the time. Saif waited for three days, but Neeraj couldn’t finish writing the entire screenplay. As a result, Saif had to commit his dates to another project.” The film eventually went to Akshay Kumar, becoming one of the most beloved comedies in Indian cinema.

A First Meeting Defined by Cricket

The director also recalled their first-ever meeting, which was far less focused on the silver screen than it was on the legendary cricket pitch. A massive admirer of Indian cricket history, Priyadarshan admitted that his primary motivation for meeting the actor was the chance to encounter his father, the legendary Indian cricket captain, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

“The first thing I told him was, ‘Is your father here? I want to meet him,’” the director recounted. This admiration for the senior Pataudi dated back to the filmmaker’s youth, when he followed the cricketer’s career with fervor. Priyadarshan even shared a poignant anecdote about a failed attempt to meet his hero during a Ranji Trophy match in his younger days—an attempt that resulted in a painful fall and injury rather than a handshake with the legend.

Bonding Over ‘Haiwaan’

Decades later, the director and actor have finally collaborated on the upcoming project, Haiwaan. Throughout the filming process, their shared interest in the elder Pataudi’s legacy became a frequent topic of conversation.

“On the sets, I discussed Tiger Pataudi with Saif a lot. I remember all his scores,” Priyadarshan said, noting that he even brought a book about the cricketer for Saif to sign. This mutual respect for the legendary sportsman helped build a unique, personal rapport between the two during production.

A Highly Anticipated Reunion

The release of Haiwaan marks a major milestone for Bollywood fans, as it features a reunion between Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar 18 years after they last shared the screen in Tashan. In this new film, which is a remake of the Mohanlal-starrer Oppam, Saif Ali Khan takes on the role of a visually challenged protagonist. The film is slated for a theatrical release on September 11, promising a blend of suspense and powerful performances.
