Teen Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Smashes Records in Duleep Trophy Stunner
BENGALURU: Indian cricket may have found its next generational talent. On Monday, 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi announced his arrival on the big stage, delivering a blistering 92-run knock during the Duleep Trophy semifinal between East Zone and Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
A Historic Display of Fearlessness
At just 15 years and 157 days old, the left-handed opener etched his name into the history books, becoming the youngest player ever to score a half-century in the prestigious tournament. In doing so, he eclipsed a record held for over half a century by Central Zone’s Laxman Singh, who set the previous mark of 16 years and 23 days in January 1969.
Despite his youth, Sooryavanshi approached the crease with the composure of a veteran. His 118-minute stay at the wicket was characterized by a daring, aggressive intent that saw him smash seven fours and seven towering sixes across 81 deliveries.
Turning Potential into Performance
While Sooryavanshi had already earned a reputation as a white-ball specialist since his Ranji Trophy debut in 2024, his transition to first-class cricket had been a learning curve. Heading into this match with 215 runs from nine outings, the teenager proved he could adapt his high-octane style to the red-ball format.
The tone was set early as East Zone raced to 64 runs in just the first 10 overs. Though he received a reprieve on 40—dropped by Yash Rathod off the bowling of Saransh Jain—the youngster capitalized on the luck, bringing up his fifty with a clean strike over long-on in just 42 balls.
His range was on full display throughout the innings. Whether charging down the track to pacer Aryan Pandey or punishing Indian Test-capped off-spinner Saransh Jain, Sooryavanshi maintained a level of dominance that left spectators and experts alike in awe.
A Narrow Miss, A Massive Statement
The fairy-tale century remained just out of reach. In the 25th over, attempting another aggressive maximum, Sooryavanshi holed out to Arshad Khan at deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Harsh Dubey. While he was visibly distraught to fall eight runs short of a maiden first-class ton, his contribution was instrumental.
Alongside veteran Abhimanyu Easwaran, who chipped in with a steady 69, the duo anchored a 161-run opening stand. Their efforts propelled East Zone to a total of 266, effectively matching Central Zone’s first-innings score and ensuring the match remains delicately poised.
By the close of play, Central Zone found themselves at 45/3, with Mukesh Kumar striking twice to keep the pressure on. However, the day belonged to the teenager from Bihar, who has unequivocally signaled that he is ready to take the next step in his professional career.
