Bit Reactor Faces Internal Crisis Following Successful Launch of ‘Star Wars Zero Company’

In a stark contrast to the typical industry narrative of celebration following a successful game launch, the developers behind Star Wars Zero Company are navigating a period of profound uncertainty. While the tactical combat title has debuted to rave reviews and vaulted to the top of the Steam sales charts, a significant portion of the workforce responsible for its creation remains furloughed without pay.

A Bittersweet Milestone

Last week, Maryland-based studio Bit Reactor reached what should have been its greatest milestone since its 2021 founding. Star Wars Zero Company released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, earning critical acclaim and drawing praise from fans who have lauded it as a standout entry in recent Star Wars gaming history. Amid the launch festivities at Gamescom in Germany, studio co-founder Greg Foertsch even participated in discussions regarding the developer’s potential future projects.

However, behind the scenes, the atmosphere is far from celebratory. Sources indicate that the studio, which recently hit its creative stride, has been operating with only a skeleton crew.

Widespread Furloughs

A representative for Bit Reactor confirmed to Game File that the studio implemented furloughs for a large segment of its staff shortly before the game’s release. The company characterized the move as a “difficult decision” made independently of publisher Electronic Arts or IP holder Disney.

While the studio declined to specify the exact number of affected employees, internal and legal documents suggest a severe impact. A filing from an ongoing lawsuit involving a studio co-founder noted that the company had “furloughed most of its employees and terminated contractors.” Sources close to the situation estimate that as many as 80% of the staff were impacted, leaving behind only a minimal team to handle critical post-launch support and technical maintenance.

Lingering Legal Turmoil

The instability within the studio is further compounded by a high-stakes legal battle. Alison Kelly, who served as the studio’s Chief Operating Officer until 2024, is currently engaged in a bitter lawsuit against co-founder Greg Foertsch.

The litigation, which is currently scheduled for trial in early 2027, centers on a dispute over ownership and allegations of breach of contract. Kelly, who is seeking damages exceeding $20 million, claims she was improperly pushed out of the company she helped build. Conversely, Foertsch’s legal team contends that Kelly never held co-ownership status and has raised counterclaims regarding her professional performance—all of which Kelly denies.

An Uncertain Future

The primary question remains whether the commercial success of Star Wars Zero Company will be enough to reverse the company’s financial decline. While Bit Reactor management has expressed hope that the game’s performance could lead to the restoration of pay and the rehiring of staff, many former employees remain skeptical.

“Everybody has essentially the same story,” said Zachariah Scott, a former senior technical artist who departed the studio in May. “They are concealing the fact that the team was furloughed weeks ago.”

As the industry watches the latest Star Wars hit continue to climb the charts, the human cost of its development serves as a sobering reminder of the volatility inherent in the modern game development ecosystem.
