South West Water Defends Environmental Record Amidst Critical Industry Analysis
South West Water has issued a robust defense of its environmental performance, citing significant progress in reducing storm-overflow activity and hitting critical infrastructure milestones, following a report that ranked the utility company as the lowest-performing in England.
The company’s statement comes in direct response to an analysis conducted by Friends of the Earth and highlighted by The Guardian, which scrutinized England’s water providers across six key metrics. These included sewage spill duration, the ecological health of local rivers, bathing-water pollution, and the affordability of customer bills.
The findings placed South West Water at the bottom of the sector, identifying it as one of the three worst-performing companies in four of the six categories studied. Data cited in the report suggested that the company recorded an average of 574,323 hours of sewage spills per year since 2024, alongside 666 bathing-water pollution incidents and warnings during 2025.
Contesting the Narrative
South West Water has pushed back against these rankings, arguing that the analysis fails to capture the significant operational improvements implemented over the past 12 months.
A company spokesperson emphasized that despite facing record-breaking rainfall across the region—which typically increases pressure on wastewater networks—the firm has successfully reduced the frequency of storm-overflow spills by 17%, with the total duration of these spills dropping by 25%.
“We manage more than a third of England’s designated bathing waters, so improving water quality is a huge priority for us,” the spokesperson stated.
Investing in the Future
The company attributed its current trajectory to a program of record investment aimed at modernizing its aging network and wastewater infrastructure. Beyond short-term reductions in spill data, South West Water reiterated its commitment to long-term compliance, asserting that it is currently on track to meet the new Environment Act bathing-water standards by 2030—five years ahead of the national legislative deadline.
The debate highlights the growing tension between environmental groups, who are calling for greater transparency and stricter accountability, and utility providers, who are attempting to balance rapid infrastructure upgrades with the challenges posed by increasingly extreme weather events.
As the industry faces mounting regulatory pressure, South West Water maintains that its record investment will ultimately deliver the sustainable water quality improvements required by both the public and environmental regulators.
