India Set to Pioneer ‘Agentic Payments’ on UPI Infrastructure

NEW DELHI – India is poised to take a significant leap forward in its digital payments evolution, with sources familiar with the matter revealing that authorities are preparing to introduce “agentic payments” within the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem.

This upcoming technological integration marks a major shift in how digital transactions are conducted. By incorporating artificial intelligence-driven agents into the UPI framework, the system will move beyond simple, manual peer-to-peer or merchant transfers. Instead, users will be able to authorize AI assistants to autonomously manage complex financial tasks, execute multi-step transactions, and navigate service interfaces on their behalf.

The move is part of a broader strategy by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to maintain the nation’s position as a global leader in real-time retail payments. By leveraging the agentic payments model, the government aims to enhance user convenience and expand the utility of UPI for high-frequency, administrative, and recurring financial services.

Industry experts note that “agentic” capabilities—referring to systems capable of reasoning and acting to achieve specific goals—could revolutionize consumer experiences. Rather than manually inputting details for recurring bills, investments, or travel bookings, users could instruct an AI agent to “find the best flight and book it using my UPI,” with the agent handling the authentication and completion of the process securely.

While the exact timeline for the rollout remains under wraps, the initiative underscores India’s commitment to building a “finance-first” AI infrastructure. Security experts emphasize that the implementation will prioritize robust verification protocols to ensure that these autonomous agents operate within strict user-defined parameters, safeguarding against unauthorized activity.

As UPI continues to handle billions of transactions monthly, this next-generation update is expected to reduce friction in digital commerce and further integrate AI into the daily financial lives of millions of Indians.
