S.C.A.T. Is Back! Tengo Project Returns With A Remaster Of The NES Classic, Final Mission

The 8-Bit Cult Classic Returns: Tengo Project Announces ‘Cybernetic Attack Final Mission’ Remaster

Renowned masters of the modern retro-revival, Tengo Project, have officially pulled the curtain back on their latest endeavor. In an announcement from publisher Winning Entertainment Group, the studio has confirmed they are hard at work on Cybernetic Attack Final Mission, a high-fidelity reimagining of Natsume’s 1990 Famicom classic, Final Mission.

For retro enthusiasts, this project marks a thrilling return to a title perhaps better known to Western audiences by its notoriously memorable NES moniker: S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team.

A Classic Premise Reimagined

Set in the neon-drenched, high-stakes atmosphere of 2029, the original game thrust players into a desperate defense of New York City. The metropolis found itself under siege by the intergalactic warlord Vile Malmort, who had successfully bridged his space station to the city, creating a gateway for a full-scale extraterrestrial invasion.

The original title was a standout in the 8-bit library, often compared to Capcom’s arcade hit Forgotten Worlds. It offered a unique blend of horizontal and vertical scrolling action, distinguished by a distinct mechanic that allowed one or two players to navigate the skies with upgradeable weaponry and tactical, 8-way orbiting satellites.

Modern Polish, Classic Intensity

Tengo Project has built a sterling reputation for breathing new life into forgotten gems—a legacy bolstered by their acclaimed work on The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors. This new remaster promises to maintain the soul of the original while pushing the boundaries of its retro-futuristic aesthetic.

While the core run-and-gun gameplay remains at the heart of the experience, the studio is significantly expanding the roster of playable characters. Fans can look forward to controlling new, distinct units, including the imposing mech-monster “Titan” and the agile, jetbike-mounted “Queen Bee.” Notably, the game’s original protagonists—playfully referenced as Arnold and Sigourney in the 90s—appear to have been retired, likely to avoid the legal headaches of their action-star-inspired monikers.

A New Horizon for Shmup Fans

The studio’s commitment to preserving the “fine pixelated fare” of the past while utilizing modern technical prowess has made Cybernetic Attack Final Mission one of the most anticipated titles for fans of the genre.

While specific platform availability and a firm release date have yet to be disclosed, Winning Entertainment Group has confirmed that the title will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show 2026, which opens its doors on September 17. With the industry turning its eyes toward the event, fans won’t have to wait long to see if this remake captures the same lightning in a bottle as the 1990 original.
