Double Fine Teases Brutal Legend 2 in Ambitious New Kickstarter Campaign
Double Fine, the beloved studio behind iconic titles like Psychonauts and Costume Quest, has returned to its roots with a new crowdfunding initiative—and a tongue-in-cheek promise that has sent fans into a frenzy. The developer has announced that it will finally produce the long-awaited sequel to its cult-classic, heavy-metal-infused open-world game, Brütal Legend, provided its latest Kickstarter campaign hits a staggering $100 million.
Independence and a New Beginning
This development comes during a period of massive transformation for the studio. Earlier this summer, Double Fine officially parted ways with Xbox ownership. The split occurred amidst a wider industry climate that saw Microsoft initiate a series of layoffs affecting approximately 3,200 jobs. Following the transition, Double Fine successfully regained its independence and full control over its storied back catalog, including Psychonauts, Kiln, and Brütal Legend.
Amnesia Fortnight 2026: The Indie Reboot
The studio’s latest venture, “Amnesia Fortnight 2026, Indie Reboot,” revives a cherished company tradition dating back to 2007. In this two-week “game jam,” the development team sets aside their standard roadmaps to pitch experimental ideas. The goal is to produce playable prototypes, with one ultimately chosen to be fully fleshed out into a retail-ready game under the studio’s new label, “Double Fine Action Labs.”
The process will be chronicled by the acclaimed documentary crew 2 Player Productions, known for their deep-dive PsychOdyssey series.
The $100 Million Question
Hidden within the campaign’s stretch goals is the “Brütal Legend 2” tier. The studio playfully notes: “We make Brütal Legend 2. Yes, really. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait and see…”
Industry observers and fans alike have recognized this as a quintessential display of Double Fine’s signature humor. Raising $100 million on Kickstarter is, for all intents and purposes, an impossible feat. For context, the most successful crowdfunding campaign in history—a 3D printer project—raised $46 million, while the gaming record is currently held by Shenmue 3, which pulled in $6 million.
While a sequel to the Jack Black-starring action-RTS remains a long shot, the campaign is already off to a promising start. As of now, the project has raised over £236,000 toward its initial £295,399 goal.
Even if the $100 million target remains out of reach, fans have plenty to look forward to. With 26 bizarre and inspired pitches—including titles like “Lesbian Sled Death” and “Brouroboros”—the “Amnesia Fortnight 2026” campaign highlights that, despite its massive growth over the years, the studio remains as dedicated to “weird little games” as ever.
Double Fine will finally make Brütal Legend 2, but only if the studio’s new Kickstarter campaign hits an almost impossible $100m.
