Surprise Update: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Receives First Patch in Over a Year

In a move that caught many fans off guard, Nintendo has released a new update for its flagship fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The title has officially been bumped to version 13.0.5, marking the first time the game has received a technical update in over a year.

The last time players saw a patch for the game was in June 2024, when version 13.0.4 was deployed. While many fans often hope for balance changes or new content, this latest release is strictly focused on stability and backend infrastructure.

What’s New in Version 13.0.5?

According to the official patch notes provided by Nintendo, the update is a minor one, designed to address a specific issue regarding data integrity. The company noted a fix for “behavior that occurs when invalid data is sent or received in online battles.”

While the change is small in scope, it remains an essential update for maintaining the integrity of the game’s competitive online environment.

Important Notice for Replay Preservation

Players who frequently use the game’s “Vault” feature to save their greatest matches should take note of a major compatibility warning. Updating the game will render most existing replays incompatible:

  • Replays from Ver. 9.0.0 to 13.0.4: These may experience compatibility issues and likely won’t play correctly after the update.
  • Replays from Ver. 8.1.0 and earlier: These are no longer compatible.

If you have a favorite match saved that you wish to preserve, Nintendo advises converting it into a video file before installing the patch. You can do this by navigating to Vault → Replays → Replay Data → Convert to Video.

A Busy Week for Nintendo Updates

This latest patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is part of a broader wave of activity from Nintendo this week. The company has been rolling out several updates across its catalog of legacy Switch titles, many of which appear to be preparing older games for future hardware or improved system stability. Notably, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe recently received a massive update, while Pikmin 3 Deluxe and Mario Tennis Aces also saw patches go live.

Despite being several years old, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate remains a staple in the competitive gaming community. Whether you are a casual player or a tournament regular, it is recommended to download the update to ensure your online functionality remains uninterrupted.
