Ministry of Education Extends Deadline for NMMS Scholarship 2026-27 Applications

The Ministry of Education has announced a formal extension for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) 2026-27 application window. Students eager to avail themselves of this financial assistance now have until September 30, 2026, to submit their applications via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

Recognizing the need to accommodate the verification process, the Ministry has also adjusted the timelines for institutional and district-level officials. The deadline for Institute Nodal Officer (INO) verification has been pushed to October 15, while District Nodal Officer (DNO) verification must now be completed by October 31.

Prospective applicants are reminded that a One-Time Registration (OTR) on the NSP is a mandatory prerequisite before they can proceed with their scholarship application.

Empowering Students Through Financial Aid

The NMMS remains a cornerstone of the government’s efforts to curb dropout rates among students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By providing financial support, the scheme enables meritorious students to pursue their education beyond the eighth grade.

Each year, the program awards one lakh fresh scholarships to students who successfully clear the selection examination administered by their respective state or Union Territory. Once awarded, the scholarship provides ongoing support from Class 10 through Class 12, subject to the student maintaining satisfactory academic performance during the renewal process. The scheme is specifically tailored for students enrolled in Government, Government-aided, and local body schools.

Eligibility Criteria and Scholarship Details

Selected candidates under the NMMS receive an annual scholarship of Rs 12,000, which is disbursed directly into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.

To qualify for this financial support, students must meet specific criteria:

• Income Limit: The annual income of the student’s family must not exceed Rs 3.50 lakh.
• Academic Merit: Candidates must have secured at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) in their Class 7 examinations to be eligible for the selection test.

With the government extending the application deadline, students and their families are encouraged to utilize this additional time to ensure all documentation is accurate and submitted through the NMMS scholarship portal before the new cutoff date. This extension serves as a vital opportunity for those who may have faced delays in the registration process to secure their path toward academic excellence.
