Enzo Fernández transfer news: Manchester City complete record breaking transfer from Chelsea

Record-Breaking Move: Manchester City Secure Enzo Fernández in Deadline Day Blockbuster

Manchester City have officially completed the signing of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, with the deal reaching a staggering €145 million. The move marks a dramatic end to a lengthy transfer saga and sets a new benchmark for Premier League spending.

The transfer, finalized on deadline day, sees Fernández reunite with manager Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium. The Argentine international, who boasts a current market value of €100 million, has long been a primary target for the City hierarchy, with the club determined to bolster their midfield ranks despite complex and protracted negotiations with their London counterparts.

A Historic Financial Commitment

The €145m fee makes Fernández the joint-record Premier League transfer, matching the figure paid by Liverpool to Newcastle for Alexander Isak last summer. The deal cements Fernández’s status as the most expensive central midfielder in football history and the most expensive Argentine player of all time.

For Chelsea, the move represents a profit on the €121m they paid to Benfica in January 2023—a fee that was a league record at the time. Since arriving in England, the 23-year-old has been a prolific contributor, recording 31 goals and 30 assists in 170 appearances for the Blues. However, following a difficult period at Stamford Bridge, the midfielder made his intentions clear regarding a move to Manchester.

“A Club Built for Success”

In his first official statement as a City player, Fernández expressed his admiration for the club’s structure and pedigree.

“Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times,” Fernández said. “Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are. I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies.”

He added: “I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day. I give absolutely everything, and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here.”

A Controversial Departure

The atmosphere surrounding the deal has been tense, particularly following Fernández’s final appearance for Chelsea—a 3-2 victory over Fulham where he was greeted by boos from sections of the home support.

This move follows a period of intense speculation, with the club having seen an initial bid rejected earlier in the window. Chelsea’s insistence on securing a viable replacement delayed proceedings, but the persistence of both the player and the City board ultimately pushed the transfer over the line.

As Pep Guardiola looks to integrate the World Cup winner into his squad, the pressure will be immediate. With a transfer fee of this magnitude, the expectations for Fernández to replicate his best form under Maresca—the same manager under whom he flourished in West London—will be higher than ever.
