End of an Era: GTA 6 Finally Ditches the Controversial Sprint Button

For decades, Rockstar Games has been hailed for creating some of the most immersive open-world experiences in the history of the medium. However, even the most acclaimed titles—such as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2—have been plagued by a persistent, lighthearted gripe from the player base: the “controller-mashing” sprint mechanic.

For years, Rockstar persisted with mapping the sprint function to the ‘X’ button (on PlayStation), forcing players to rhythmically tap or hold the button down for extended periods. This approach stood in stark contrast to the rest of the gaming industry, which largely standardized sprinting by clicking the L3 (left thumbstick) button.

It appears, however, that Rockstar is finally listening. According to recent previews of the highly anticipated GTA 6, the developer is moving toward a more modern control scheme.

A Modernized Approach to Movement

The update comes by way of YouTuber MikeShowSha, who was among a select group of creators invited to preview the game ahead of its official marketing push. In a subsequent Q&A session, MikeShowSha confirmed that in the build he played, the default input for sprinting as protagonists Jason or Lucia is now the L3 thumbstick click—a welcome change for players who have spent years wearing out their controllers on previous entries.

Beyond the button mapping, those who attended the preview sessions noted a clear emphasis on player agency. Rockstar reportedly intends to offer deep customization options, including various run speeds and traversal settings. Given this commitment to accessibility and player preference, it is highly likely that the game will include a settings toggle for those who, for reasons of nostalgia or habit, might still prefer the classic “tap to sprint” configuration.

A Long Road to Release

The shift in control philosophy is just one of many refinements fans are expecting from the next installment in the legendary franchise. As Rockstar continues to iterate on its proprietary engine, players are looking forward to the most responsive Grand Theft Auto experience to date.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Whether this change is a relief to your thumbs or if you’ll miss the “classic” Rockstar sprint, the upcoming title is shaping up to be a defining moment for the open-world genre.
