For fans of country music icon Dolly Parton, a unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of a legend has arrived. A charming, historic cottage in Solvang, California—which once served as a private weekend retreat for the singer—has officially been listed for sale at $1.995 million.
The property, which Parton owned between 2004 and 2014, is far more than a typical residence; it is a three-home compound that preserves several personal touches from the star’s decade of ownership. Since the announcement of the sale, interest has surged from prospective buyers across the United States, as well as from as far away as the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
A Private Sanctuary for a Global Icon
Nestled in the foothills of Solvang, the property dates back to 1920. During her time there, Parton used the cottage as an escape from the limelight, frequently staying with her longtime childhood friend, Judy Ogle.
The home features whimsical details that capture the essence of the singer, including a stained-glass window above the front door emblazoned with her name and a butterfly motif. Even today, a plaque on the white picket fence honors the home’s history as a refuge for the beloved American icon.
Chris Lapp, the current co-owner who purchased the compound in 2022 for $1.3 million and invested $100,000 in renovations, shared anecdotes about Parton’s specific preferences. Caretakers were famously instructed to keep the home stocked with fresh flowers and, most notably, plenty of Spam—one of the singer’s favorite comfort foods.
Inside the “Wig Room” and Beyond
The main residence is a 1,100-square-foot, two-story cottage defined by farmhouse charm. It features hand-carved woodwork, delicate lattice detailing, and cozy, hand-knit pillows. Perhaps the most intriguing space is a converted 12-by-13-foot garage that served as Parton’s personal “wig room.” Adorned with red and pink tones and lipstick-inspired decor, the room still reflects the glamorous aesthetic the country superstar is known for.

Since the listing went live, current owner Chris Lapp has noted a spike in interest, though he remains protective of the property’s legacy. He admits to rejecting a “lowball” offer and now requires proof of funds for all potential buyers, largely to discourage those simply looking for a glimpse into the celebrity’s past.
Lapp has expressed a sincere hope that a dedicated fan might purchase the home to preserve its history. He even suggested a potential price reduction if the City of Solvang were to purchase the site as a landmark. However, Solvang Mayor David Brown has declined the idea, stating, “We will all always love Dolly. It doesn’t take a physical property for that.”
