Square Enix Locks Final Fantasy VII Revelation Early Access Behind $100 Premium Edition

Square Enix has officially unveiled the pre-order details for its highly anticipated open-world RPG, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, but the announcement has drawn attention for its aggressive tiered pricing strategy. While the base game is slated for an April 8, 2026, release, the publisher is offering premium bundles that invite players to pay a significant surplus for content—and a head start.

The most notable aspect of the announcement is the $100 “Premium Edition.” Beyond including a Story Expansion Pass—which covers two future DLC installments—this tier acts as a gatekeeper for early adopters, providing 24-hour early access to the game.

The Cost of Convenience

For those looking to go beyond the $100 price point, Square Enix has also introduced a “Premium Plus Edition” for $110. This top-tier version adds a digital art book, a mini-soundtrack, and several in-game gameplay enhancers, such as the Polydroid Alexander Summoning Materia, the Nymphwing Bracelet, and the Risk Taker’s Choker.

This move underscores an increasing industry trend where publishers leverage “Fear Of Missing Out” (FOMO) to drive revenue. By gating the launch day behind a paywall, publishers encourage core fans to pay up to $30 over the standard retail price for the privilege of playing just one day ahead of the general public. As critics point out, paid early access has become a common tactic for boosting initial sales numbers in an era where game development costs are soaring.

What’s in the Pass?

The Story Expansion Pass included in these premium editions promises two major narrative additions, though specific details remain sparse:

  • Story DLC 1: Sephiroth (Targeted for Winter 2027)
  • Story DLC 2: Vincent & the Turks (Targeted for Spring 2028)

Square Enix has confirmed that these DLCs will be available for separate purchase, though their individual pricing has not yet been disclosed.

Pre-Order Incentives

For fans who choose to pre-order any version of the game before April 8, 2027, the publisher is offering a “Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle” Summoning Materia. While Square Enix notes that this digital content may be made available for purchase at a later date, the incentive serves as a primary motivator for fans currently weighing their options.

With a release date still months away, the debate continues over whether these premium incentives—specifically the 24-hour window—provide genuine value to the consumer or represent an overreach in modern video game monetization. As it stands, fans of the Final Fantasy franchise must decide if the early jump into Revelation is worth the premium price tag.
