Tilbury MP Presses for Action as Dust Pollution Plagues Residents

THURROCK, UK – As frustration mounts over persistent air quality issues in Tilbury, local MP Jen Craft has confirmed she will meet with the Environment Agency later this month to demand concrete solutions to the town’s ongoing dust pollution crisis.

The Labour MP initiated the high-level meeting following a surge in complaints from constituents. Residents have long expressed concern over air quality, noting that recent spells of hot and dry weather have exacerbated the dispersion of dust, significantly impacting the quality of life in the area.

“Dust pollution in Tilbury is a serious issue, and one that I know causes misery for residents,” Ms. Craft stated. “The recent hot, dry weather has made things worse, as I’ve heard from many people locally.”

Building a Case for Enforcement

Ms. Craft is calling on the community to provide detailed, firsthand accounts of their experiences. By gathering specific timestamps and locations of pollution events, she aims to provide the Environment Agency with a clear, evidence-based picture of the problem. This data, she argues, is essential to moving beyond investigations and securing actual enforcement action against industrial offenders.

“I pushed hard to get this meeting set up because it’s vital that we build up a clear picture of when and where this is happening to enable enforcement action,” she added.

A Coordinated Response

The issue has been a focal point of local politics for several months. While the primary sources of the dust remain subject to ongoing investigation, the council and national regulatory bodies have stepped up their monitoring efforts.

Earlier this year, authorities announced a coordinated strategy to hold polluters accountable:

• Permanent Presence: In March, it was announced that the Environment Agency would station a dedicated staff member permanently within Tilbury to oversee air quality.
• Monitoring Support: The Port Health Authority has been drafted in to provide specialized officers to assist with the investigation of complaints.
• Reporting Hotline: In April, Thurrock Council introduced a 24-hour dedicated dust hotline, enabling residents to report incidents in real-time, ensuring that environmental officers can respond to active problems.

Ms. Craft has also taken the fight to the national stage, confirming she has written to government ministers to lobby for tougher regulations regarding industrial dust emissions.
