Sheriff opposes ‘Vice City’ marketing tie to Miami Dade

Miami-Dade’s Potential “Vice City” Marketing Deal Faces Sharp Pushback from Sheriff

A proposed marketing partnership between Miami-Dade County and Rockstar Games, the developer behind the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto VI franchise, has sparked a heated debate over the intersection of public branding and the glorification of criminal activity.

The potential deal, initially brought to light by The Miamian, suggests that Miami-Dade could leverage its real-life landmarks to promote the upcoming release of the highly anticipated video game. Under the proposal, the county’s infrastructure—including Miami International Airport—would receive “Vice City” branding, with ideas ranging from themed welcome messages for travelers to custom-wrapped Metromover cars and localized manhole covers.

A Clash Over Public Image

The proposal, which emerged from the staff of Democratic Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, has met with firm resistance from Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz. The sheriff, a Republican, argues that the county should not lend its credibility to a brand built on the premise of lawlessness.

Grand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity,” Cordero-Stutz said in a statement. “Its fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office work every single day to prevent.”

The pushback has gained political momentum, joined by Miami-Dade Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez. “Miami-Dade County has spent decades building a reputation as a world-class destination for tourism, business, investment, and opportunity,” Bermudez said. “We should be promoting the Miami-Dade we have worked so hard to build, not a fictional version of our community defined by crime and violence.”

Budget Tensions and Judicial Concerns

The controversy arrives at a sensitive time for the county. Mayor Levine Cava and Sheriff Cordero-Stutz are currently navigating a high-stakes budget negotiation regarding the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office funding for 2027. With the mayor proposing a 6% increase to the agency’s $1.2 billion budget and the sheriff advocating for a 12% boost, the disagreement over the GTA marketing campaign adds another layer of friction to the upcoming commission hearings.

The judicial branch has also weighed in, albeit with a more nuanced perspective. While Chief Judge Ariana Fajardo and Clerk Juan Fernandez-Barquin officially requested that county courthouses remain excluded from any promotional activities, they stopped short of condemning a potential deal in its entirety. The officials acknowledged that a partnership with Rockstar Games could provide “significant” economic benefits for the county’s bottom line.

Moving Forward

County officials have emphasized that the marketing presentation was preliminary and that the ideas discussed had not been formally vetted for feasibility. While Rockstar Games reportedly initiated the interest, the administration now faces the challenge of balancing the pursuit of creative revenue streams against the professional concerns of the county’s law enforcement and judicial leaders.

As the county prepares for upcoming budget votes, the question remains whether the allure of a lucrative marketing partnership is enough to outweigh the optics of associating the region with its fictional, crime-ridden digital counterpart.
