TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The production house Amazon MGM Studios has temporarily halted the production of the television series Tomb Raider. The delay is due to one of their stars, Sophie Turner, suffering an injury. In the film, Turner plays the main character, Lara Croft.
“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” said Amazon MGM Studios in a statement quoted by Entertainment Weekly.
Success of the Tomb Raider Franchise
Previously, on January 15, Amazon announced that they would start the production process for the Tomb Raider series. The series is based on the popular video game of the same title and has been adapted into two films starring Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s. However, the release date for the live-action series from this franchise has not been confirmed.
Although there has been no further announcement, Variety speculates that the series will air in 2027. However, it is unclear whether the injury suffered by Sophie Turner will affect this or not.
So far, Tomb Raider has been a fertile ground for the franchise, with the first film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, grossing more than twice its budget in 2001. While the budget of US$95 million for its sequel, The Cradle of Life, has generated US$160 million or around Rp2.7 trillion. Two other animated series starring Swedish Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander have also grossed more than twice their budget.
Meaning of Tomb Raider for Sophie Turner
In a statement in May 2024, Sophia Turner referred to Tomb Raider as “Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.” Turner even stated that if she had told her teenage self about her involvement in the project, she would have “explode.”
“Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators,” said Turner at that time.
Turner will share the screen with Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, and August Wittgenstein. Phoebe Waller-Bridge will take on multiple roles as the creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner.
Waller-Bridge will work alongside Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and executive producer; and Jonathan Van Tulleken as director and executive producer. Story Kitchen and Crystal Dynamics are also partnering with Amazon MGM Studios to produce this series.
