The report identifies the transition to clean electricity as the “highest-leverage” intervention. As wind and solar power continue to drop in price, they create a ripple effect that improves the economics of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and industrial electrification. “The cascade of clean energy that we’re seeing now is doing so much more than anybody expected,” Smith said. Beyond the energy sector, the report points to the reform of commodity supply chains as a critical lever for planetary health. Much of the world’s tropical deforestation is driven by a concentrated trade in beef, soy, palm oil, timber, cocoa, and coffee. The analysis argues that if major markets like the EU, China, the US, and the UK aligned their regulatory standards, they could effectively make deforestation-free products the global norm. If financial institutions, wholesalers, and governments adopted a unified front, the cost of funding or selling goods linked to environmental destruction would become prohibitive.

Other high-impact interventions include the rapid reduction of methane emissions and the modernization of household energy. Because methane remains in the atmosphere for only about 12 years but accounts for roughly 30% of global warming, satellite-monitored abatement is identified as one of the fastest ways to curb peak warming temperatures. Similarly, decentralizing solar power for clean cooking could improve the lives of the 2.1 billion people currently reliant on harmful solid fuels.

Despite these opportunities, the report notes a glaring misalignment in global finance. Approximately $7.3tn is funneled annually into activities that degrade nature, compared to a mere $220bn for nature-based solutions. “For every £1 invested in protecting nature, you’ve got £30 spent trying to degrade it,” said Smith. “That’s a political choice and it’s not a lack of finance. It’s where it’s used.”

Ultimately, the report argues that human-driven progress can reach a point of “critical mass” where sustainable practices no longer require heavy intervention. By strategically applying resources to these 51 identified priority areas, the global community may be able to turn the tide, ensuring that the next cascade of change is one of restoration rather than collapse.
