India’s massive textile and apparel sector, a cornerstone of the nation’s manufacturing economy, is facing a critical crossroads. While the global industry races toward Industry 4.0, a new report by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has highlighted a significant digital lag that threatens the long-term competitiveness of domestic manufacturers.
The report, titled AI, Automation & Digitalisation Readiness in the Indian Textile & Apparel Industry, was unveiled by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the UP TEX 2026 event in Lucknow. Compiled with the support of the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA), the study offers a comprehensive look at the technological pulse of the industry, spanning spinning, garmenting, home textiles, and technical textile segments.
The Digital Gap
The findings paint a sobering picture of the industry’s current technological landscape. According to the data, 38% of surveyed textile firms are still operating without any foundational digital systems in place. Furthermore, 35% of companies have yet to initiate their journey into Artificial Intelligence (AI). In contrast, a mere 14% of respondents indicated that they have achieved full integration of digital systems.
This disparity is particularly concerning given that the survey included a high volume of export-oriented businesses—nearly 70% of respondents cater to international markets. As global buyers increasingly demand supply chain transparency, real-time data tracking, and high-precision production standards, the lack of digital infrastructure places these firms at a distinct disadvantage compared to international rivals.
Barriers to Innovation
Why is the industry stalling on the path to modernization? The CITI report identifies two primary culprits: the prohibitive cost of capital investment and a widening chasm in the availability of skilled talent.
Currently, automation within Indian mills is largely confined to basic, routine tasks such as machine monitoring and initial settings. High-level applications, such as AI-driven production scheduling and predictive maintenance, remain underutilized. Ashwin Chandran, Chairman of CITI, noted that while the industry is undoubtedly moving toward digitalization to enhance productivity and quality, the pace is insufficient.
“The industry has begun its technology adoption journey, but it must urgently strengthen its digital foundations and internal capabilities to remain competitive on the global stage,” Chandran stated.
A Global Perspective
The report places India squarely in the “early-to-emerging” stage of technological maturity. When benchmarked against global leaders, particularly China, India’s textile ecosystem appears to be trailing significantly. The study also addressed the sensitive issue of labor, noting that the impact of technology on employment remains mixed. Currently, the transition is being hampered by the fact that most training programs are informal and localized to individual enterprises, rather than being part of a structured, industry-wide upskilling initiative.
As the government pushes for greater manufacturing prowess through initiatives like “Make in India,” the CITI report serves as a wake-up call. To maintain its standing as a global textile hub, the industry must pivot from manual legacy processes to integrated digital ecosystems, bridging the investment and skill gaps that currently hold back the sector’s full potential.
