Pharaohs of the Nile: Viking Welcomes Latest River Jewel to Egyptian Waters

Viking has officially expanded its footprint on the Nile with the delivery of its newest river ship, the Viking Sekhmet. The official handover ceremony took place at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, marking a significant milestone in the company’s strategic expansion within the Egyptian tourism market.

Designed specifically for the unique navigation requirements of the Nile River, the Viking Sekhmet is a boutique vessel that prioritizes intimacy and comfort. The ship accommodates just 82 guests across 41 outside-facing staterooms, ensuring an immersive experience for those looking to explore Egypt’s ancient wonders. The vessel incorporates Viking’s signature Scandinavian aesthetic, featuring a distinctive square bow, refined interior furnishings, and the cruise line’s hallmark indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace, which offers panoramic views of the river landscape.

“The Nile has connected people with the history and culture of Egypt for thousands of years, and it continues to be a destination that inspires curious travellers,” said Leah Talactac, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viking. “With the arrival of the elegant Viking Sekhmet, we are pleased to offer even more opportunities for curious travellers to explore Egypt in Viking comfort.”

The Viking Sekhmet is set to become a key asset in the company’s popular 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary. Additionally, the ship will support the newly announced 12-day “Total Eclipse on the Nile” itinerary, scheduled for 2027. Both journeys offer a comprehensive deep dive into Egyptian history. Guests begin their voyage with a three-night hotel stay in Cairo, featuring private access to the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, and the renowned Grand Egyptian Museum.

Following the land-based portion, guests travel to Luxor to board the ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise. The itinerary includes curated excursions to some of the region’s most significant sites, including the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, and the Temple of Khnum in Esna. To offer a balance of history and modern culture, the cruise also features a stop at a vibrant Nubian village, providing guests with a unique window into local life and education.

The launch of the Viking Sekhmet is part of a broader, aggressive growth strategy for the cruise line. Viking has confirmed a substantial orderbook that will see its fleet reach 114 river ships by 2028, alongside 28 ocean and expedition vessels by 2032. With 19 additional river ships, 11 ocean ships, and two expedition ships currently in development, the company continues to solidify its position as a global leader in experiential travel.
