Japanese Major Sumitomo Enters Karnataka Renewable Energy Market with Landmark Hybrid Project
In a major boost to India’s renewable energy ambitions, Japanese trading conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation has announced a strategic investment in a large-scale, hybrid renewable energy project located in the south-western state of Karnataka. This development marks a significant entry for the Japanese firm into India’s rapidly evolving green energy sector.
The project, currently being developed by Indian independent power producer Hero Future Energies, represents a sophisticated approach to energy generation. It integrates 500MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and wind power generation, complemented by a 200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). By co-locating these technologies, the project aims to overcome the intermittency issues typically associated with wind and solar power, allowing for a more stable and reliable electricity supply.
A Strategic Partnership for Long-Term Energy Security
Under the terms of the investment agreement, Sumitomo Corporation will acquire a 49% stake in Clean Solar Power (Baniyana), the project vehicle responsible for executing the development. The remaining 51% ownership will be held by a subsidiary of Hero Future Energies, ensuring that the Indian developer retains a majority control while benefiting from the financial and technical backing of the Japanese partner.
The facility is currently in an advanced stage of development and is slated for commercial operation by March 2027. Once commissioned, the project will serve as a critical supplier of green electricity under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with SJVN Limited, a government-owned utility. This long-term arrangement is designed to provide round-the-clock power, helping to stabilize the grid and fulfill the country’s rising industrial demand for renewable energy. Any surplus electricity generated beyond the terms of the PPA is expected to be traded on India’s power exchange market, offering further commercial viability.
Capitalizing on India’s Green Energy Trajectory
The decision to invest in Karnataka underscores the growing confidence international investors have in India’s renewable energy roadmap. Jun Minase, General Manager of the Overseas Energy Solution Strategic Business Unit at Sumitomo Corporation, expressed strong optimism regarding the venture.
“We are pleased to partner with Hero Future Energies and see significant potential in their clear growth ambitions,” Minase stated. He emphasized that as renewable energy becomes an increasingly integral part of India’s energy mix, the partnership will serve as a vital platform for Sumitomo to scale its clean energy business in the region. The collaboration is aimed not only at this specific hybrid project but at identifying future opportunities that support a consistent and stable supply of clean energy across India.
This investment arrives at a time when India is aggressively scaling up its manufacturing and generation capabilities in the solar and wind sectors. With domestic players and international giants increasingly focusing on high-tech solutions like hybrid parks and grid-scale storage, the Karnataka project is expected to serve as a blueprint for future large-scale developments aimed at achieving India’s net-zero transition targets. As the commercial operation date approaches in 2027, all eyes will be on the operational efficiency of this hybrid facility to see how it shapes the future of utility-scale energy projects in the country.
