India to Take Center Stage: New Delhi Secures Bid to Host 2027 WTTC Global Summit

India to Host Prestigious WTTC Global Summit in New Delhi in 2027

India is set to take center stage in the international tourism arena after being selected to host the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Global Summit in New Delhi in 2027. The announcement, made during the current WTTC summit in Malta, positions India as a premier destination for global dialogue regarding the future of the travel industry.

The selection process was highly competitive, with India emerging as the chosen host among 21 competing nations. The summit will serve as a high-level convergence point for government leaders, aviation pioneers, hospitality experts, and private-sector innovators to address critical industry trends, sustainability challenges, and investment opportunities.

A Recognition of Leadership

The announcement coincided with a significant honor for India’s leadership, as Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, was presented with the WTTC Global Champion Award. The accolade recognizes his instrumental role in advancing the nation’s tourism infrastructure and policies, reinforcing India’s status as a rising force in global travel.

WTTC Chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio noted that New Delhi will provide an ideal platform for industry giants to collaborate, while WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara emphasized that India’s massive scale, rapid growth, and improved international connectivity made it the clear choice for the upcoming summit.

Economic Growth and Employment

The tourism sector has become a vital pillar of the Indian economy. According to the latest data from the WTTC, travel and tourism injected $263.6 billion into the Indian economy in 2025, reflecting a 7.3% growth rate. More impressively, the industry serves as a major engine for employment, currently supporting 46.2 million jobs—meaning more than one in every 10 jobs across the country is linked to the tourism and travel ecosystem.

The outlook for the next decade is even more ambitious. Experts forecast that the sector’s contribution will surge to $286.1 billion by 2026, creating an additional 2 million jobs in the process. By 2036, the total economic contribution of the industry is projected to hit $527 billion, nearly doubling its current footprint.

Domestic Strength and Future Potential

While India’s international appeal is growing, the sector’s primary strength remains its robust domestic market. In 2025 alone, domestic travelers accounted for 86% of total tourism expenditure, amounting to $203 billion. This deep-rooted domestic base provides a stable foundation for the industry, even as the government focuses on diversifying and attracting more international visitors.

The long-term trajectory for India is equally promising. The WTTC projects that India is on track to climb from its current position as the 10th-largest travel and tourism economy in the world to the 4th spot by 2036.

As India prepares for the 2027 summit, the focus remains on leveraging this growth to foster better public-private partnerships. By showcasing its evolving aviation network, modernizing hospitality standards, and investing in new destination development, India aims to cement its reputation as a global travel hub and create a sustainable, high-growth roadmap for the future.
