Tragedy in the Trough: Mystery of Missing 73-Year-Old Ends in NSW Stockyard Discovery

New South Wales police have confirmed that the decomposed body discovered in a remote stockyard last week is that of Yvonne Whear, a 73-year-old woman who vanished eight months ago. Authorities are now treating her death as a homicide, marking a grim conclusion to a long-running missing person case that has left the Northern Rivers community in shock.

The body was discovered partially submerged in a disused, 15-metre-long cattle dip in Terragon, near Murwillumbah. The structure, which sits about 300 metres down an overgrown fire trail, was stumbled upon by two trail bike riders.

Acting Superintendent Matt Zimmer addressed the media on Tuesday, confirming that forensic examinations had officially identified the remains. “As a result of the forensic examinations that were conducted… we are satisfied that Yvonne has been murdered,” Zimmer said.

Whear, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was last seen on CCTV on 19 February at a service station in Murwillumbah. She had been heading to her home in the nearby hamlet of Dungay, where she had lived for 23 years. Her disappearance was immediately viewed as suspicious by her family, who noted that she had left behind her boots, her hat, and a meal in her slow cooker. She had also never abandoned her beloved animals.

The investigation into her death has been complicated and methodical. In mid-September, police divers recovered her gold Ford Escape wagon from the Rous River in Dulguigan, just a short distance from her home. Several of her personal items were also retrieved from the water.

Superintendent Zimmer acknowledged that the complexity of the crime suggests premeditation or local knowledge. When asked if the perpetrator might have had an accomplice to dump the vehicle and the body, he noted that it was “certainly one of the possibilities we’re exploring.” Police are currently examining the likelihood that the killer had intimate knowledge of the isolated Terragon site.

While the discovery of her remains provides some closure to her grieving family, the circumstances of her final moments remain a mystery. Zimmer issued a fresh appeal for public assistance, stressing that someone likely holds the missing pieces of the puzzle.

“Yvonne was a mother, grandmother, a great grandmother and a person who was clearly loved by those around her,” Zimmer said. “Someone knows what happened to Yvonne. Whether you have previously spoken to police or have information you have not yet shared, we need you to come forward.”

Police have ruled out links to any serial offenders, stating there is no broader threat to the local community. Investigators are currently focused on individuals who may have frequented the isolated stockyard area between mid-February and early October. Strike force detectives continue to scour her property and the surrounding region for forensic leads.
