Shielding the Skyline: Inside the JTF-Gold Strategy for Golden Dome Cyber Defense

COLORADO SPRINGS – US Northern Command’s (NORTHCOM) specialized task force, JTF-Gold, has been tasked with a critical new mission: securing the cyber infrastructure of the Golden Dome air and missile defense system against an increasingly sophisticated threat landscape.

Colonel Kevin “Stoney” Stonebrook, deputy commander of JTF-Gold, confirmed that the unit’s mandate now encompasses the active cyber defense of the Golden Dome’s capabilities. This pivot marks a significant expansion of the task force’s duties, ensuring that the advanced missile defense network remains resilient against foreign digital incursions.

“Our work in the cyber sphere is focused exclusively on protecting Golden Dome capabilities from enemy attacks,” Stonebrook clarified, emphasizing that the unit’s mission is strictly defensive in nature and does not involve the conduct of offensive cyber operations.

JTF-Gold, which was officially established in January, operates out of Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado, co-located with the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command. The task force is led by Lieutenant General John Rafferty, who serves in a dual capacity as head of the Army command and commander of the task force.

The unit serves as the practical engine for the implementation of the Golden Dome system, acting as a successor to a former US Space Command component that handled missile defense coordination. Currently, the task force consists of approximately 100 personnel, though its footprint is expected to grow as the Golden Dome architecture expands across the country.

The task force has already been instrumental in the foundational phase of the project, overseeing site selection and initial construction efforts for the first operational Golden Dome facility at Fort Story, Virginia. As the program matures, JTF-Gold is expected to provide similar technical and operational oversight for subsequent sites.

Despite the momentum, the full scope of responsibilities among the various military stakeholders remains a work in progress. In February, the command convened a large-scale planning session in Colorado Springs, drawing over 300 experts to synchronize the functions of the project’s diverse participants. A second, follow-up session is scheduled for late October. That meeting is expected to define the specific operational roles of the system’s three primary control nodes: Peterson and Schriever Space Force Bases in Colorado, and Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida.

By integrating cyber defense into the heart of the Golden Dome program, Northern Command is attempting to stay ahead of adversaries who increasingly view the digital backbone of missile defense as a primary target. As the system moves toward full operational capability, the role of JTF-Gold will likely become the decisive factor in ensuring that the nation’s air defense shield remains impenetrable, both in the physical and digital domains.
