Ramlila Rally Gridlock: Traders’ SOS to Rahul Gandhi as Million-Strong Tide Brings Capital to a Halt

New Delhi: Tensions are simmering between Delhi’s business community and the Opposition alliance as the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) continues to push for the relocation or rescheduling of a massive political rally planned for November 1 at the Ramlila Maidan. Despite a direct appeal to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the traders’ body has been met with a firm refusal, setting the stage for potential economic disruption during the peak Diwali shopping season.

Traders Sound Alarm Over Potential Economic Loss

The CTI, representing the capital’s vast network of entrepreneurs, has issued a fresh plea to Gandhi and Congress President Mallickerjun Kharge, citing fears of severe financial repercussions. With an estimated attendance of 10 lakh people, traders in major commercial hubs—including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, and Karol Bagh—are bracing for a complete standstill.

According to CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal, the economic stakes are incredibly high. The association estimates that a large-scale mobilization of this magnitude could result in losses of approximately ₹10,000 crore. These projections are based on the impact of a significantly smaller protest held on October 10 at Jantar Mantar, which, according to the CTI, led to a ₹3,000 crore loss due to widespread road closures and the sealing of Central Delhi.

Gandhi Defends Rally Amidst Political Standoff

The November 1 rally is a central part of the INDIA bloc’s ongoing campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Addressing the concerns of the traders on social media, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged their frustration but framed the protest as a non-negotiable battle for the nation’s democratic integrity.

In a post on X, Gandhi emphasized that the protest is a direct response to the government’s policies. “Tell Modi to sack accused no. 4, Gyanesh Kumar, and the protests will stop in 30 seconds,” he stated. While acknowledging the traders’ love and concern, he maintained that the current political situation—which he described as a “stolen vote”—threatens the future of the nation and, by extension, the security of the business community itself.

Calls for Alternative Venues

As the standoff continues, the CTI has suggested a compromise to mitigate the impact on commerce. If the rally cannot be moved to a post-Diwali date, the traders’ body has requested that organizers relocate the event to more peripheral areas such as the Burari Grounds or the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. These locations, they argue, would accommodate the massive crowds without strangling the heart of the city’s wholesale and retail markets.

The logistical concerns are equally daunting. With expectations of 15,000 to 20,000 buses descending upon the city, the CTI fears that the infrastructure surrounding Ramlila Maidan will be overwhelmed. Traders are specifically asking for clarity on whether roads will be barricaded as early as October 31, and if customers will be able to access shops during the most critical days of the pre-Diwali rush.

As the festive season reaches its crescendo, the capital now faces a collision between political agitation and commercial urgency, leaving local business owners in a state of deep uncertainty.
