The family of an 84-year-old grandfather who died after being struck by a van in a supermarket car park have paid a moving tribute to a “true gentleman” who had “time for everyone.”
Robert Siner, affectionately known as Bobby, was critically injured after being hit by an orange-coloured van in the car park of the Sainsbury’s on East Prescot Road, Knotty Ash. The incident occurred at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, October 10. Despite receiving urgent medical attention and being transported to the hospital, Mr. Siner passed away from his injuries on Monday, October 26.
In an emotional statement issued via Merseyside Police, Mr. Siner’s grieving family described him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was a pillar of the local community in Old Swan and Edge Hill.
“He was a true gentleman who had time for everyone he came across on his many walks,” the family said. “He was always the optimist and saw the good in people—he was a glass always half-full type of guy. He became a familiar face to many people in the local community.”
His relatives recalled his warm personality and his love for his family, noting that he was a constant, supportive presence in their lives. They also shared memories of his lighter side, describing him as a “cheeky rogue” who was entirely devoted to his grandchildren. An avid fan of Liverpool FC, Mr. Siner was also a regular face at The Derby Lodge pub on Prescot Road, where he enjoyed socialising with friends over a game of dominoes.
“Bobby leaves behind a legacy of love that will live on forever in all the hearts he touched,” his family added. “While our hearts are broken, and we are still totally in shock, we are grateful for the time we had.”
Merseyside Police confirmed that the driver of the van stopped at the scene immediately following the collision and is currently assisting officers with their enquiries.
Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, leading the investigation for the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed his condolences to the family and urged the public to assist with the ongoing probe.
“The car park was busy at the time of the collision, and while we have already spoken to some witnesses and obtained CCTV footage, I would ask people to cast their minds back to October 10,” Det Sgt Timpson stated. “If you saw the collision or feel you have information that may help our enquiries, please get in touch.”
